10 Insect Species in Terraformars

By Yian Lu  /  11 Jul 2016 (Monday)
Plots set in the dystopian future, about Earth’s depleting natural resources and humans’ exploration of an alternative, habitable planet may seem cliche on first look. But what makes Terraformars different from its counterparts is the — some may say, disgusting — reference to insects.

Terraforming is the project to change Mars' environment to accommodate humans. It was supposedly an efficient and cost-effective plan of sending cockroaches and mold to Mars, so that the mold would absorb sunlight and purify the atmosphere, while the cockroach corpses would serve as food source for the mold. But it turned into a nightmare when these cockroaches mutated into giant humanoid cockroaches with incredible strength. Not to mention these resilient creatures are also hard to kill, like the little brown ones you see on Earth. (Source: Terra Formars Wiki)

The solution? Genetically modified humans, with the DNA of different insect species. Before you start creeping out, let’s take a look at 10 of these insects the characters are based on in the movie!

Terraformars is opening InCinemas 14 July 2016.
