Synopsis
Two is company. Three’s a crowd.

Lin, a young girl who can see the dead broke up with her boyfriend and decided to leave the city for a break. She heads to the faraway resort in the North alone during the so-called “Low Season”, confident that she won’t have to meet the ‘tourists’ that will get on her nerves.

Ironically, she meets a group of ‘weirdos’ from different walks of life. They share a common aim – to heal their ‘wounds’ during the low season period. Lin’s plan of ‘lonesome chillin’ out’ is hindered by their company.

Lin is joined by Put, a young screenwriter who seeks inspiration for a horror story. Unknowingly, Lin becomes the source of material for his writings. They embark on an adventure to escape from the ghost and gradually falls in love…. But is it love?

Lin can see ghosts but can she see Love for what it is?

In Thailand, ‘low season’ is also known as the timing for the brokenhearted to travel and cure their wounded hearts.

Due to Lin’s ability to see ghosts and her inability to confess to her boyfriend about the issue, a rift is caused in their long term relationship. After a heart-wrenching breakup, Lin travels to the mountain to clear up her thoughts. She chooses the ‘low season’ to avoid tourists who might annoy her, but while there, she bumps into a group of strangers who have also come to heal their wounded hearts at the peaceful homestay. What’s more, she meets a young and handsome scriptwriter who likes writing ghost stories. As they spend more time together, will we see sparks ignite or will they no be able to forget their old flame?

Honestly speaking, I had little to no expectations when I first found out about the movie, but contrary to my expectations, it is surprisingly a great movie! “Low Season” is a perfect date-movie with your girlfriend/boyfriend with its heartwarming and hilarious scenes. At the same time, there is a pinch of scare-elements that will let you hug your date too!

What caught me off guard in ‘Low Season’ is the beautiful cinematography and well-planned shots that you usually see only in high budget films. It makes the whole cinematic experience better as rom-com films can get boring due to cliche pacing.

Even though the film is excellent, there were a few things that can still be improved. Firstly, when I saw the runtime for this movie, 130mins, I was quite appalled that it runs over two hours long as most rom-com’s runtime is about 90mins. Indeed I wasn’t wrong, as there were lots of unneeded scenes that could be taken out or shorten and the story won’t be disrupted. Another issue that I would like to point out is that I didn’t like how loud the sound effects were in some scenes as I honestly got a shock and that affected my emotional pacing towards the climax.

Overall, ‘Low Season’ is a movie I will recommend for a relaxing weekend date. With its feel-good theme revolving romance and comedy, it will be one that keeps you snuggled to your partner from the start till the end.
