In a time when the film slates are riddled with superhero films and movie sequels, comes a fun and daring new action-comedy that promises a bright future for a franchise of its own – Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves!
Directed by Game Night dynamic duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. It is based on the popular tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons.
This reviewer regretably knows nothing of Dungeons & Dragons lore but thankfully, the knowledge is not needed to enjoy this fantastical film.
Honor Among Thieves doesn’t waste unnecessary time trying to explain any world-building. Instead, it dives right into the strengths of its mystical and magical storylines and delivers punchy, bright sequences one after another. Tonally, the film is more reminiscent of The Chronicles of Narnia than Lord of the Rings. There’s great action and decent humour, just the right balance for an action-comedy fit for all ages!
One of its biggest strengths is casting a slew of actors who are perfect fits for their characters – Pine as the handsome bard, Rodriguez as a badass barbarian, Smith as an unassuming sorcerer, Lillis as a no-nonsense druid, Page as a charismatic paladin, and Grant channeling the same energy as his villainous Paddington 2 role. It helps the cast is also no strangers to franchises – Pine from the DCEU, Rodriguez in the Fast & Furious franchise, Grant in the Bridget Jones trilogy and Smith in the Jurassic World franchise – adding to the promising factor there’s more beyond Honor Among Thieves for this franchise to thrive.
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a refreshing new action-comedy that’s here to dispel superhero and sequel fatigue. The world-building isn’t anything we’ve never seen before but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Daley and Goldstein truly understood the assignment here and we’re just glad to be along for the ride.
