Not even Zac Efron’s abs and Dwayne Johnson’s smile can save Baywatch from drowning.

The cheesy 90s television series was a hit with fans all around the world, and with a spin-off 20-odd years later starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron and Priyanka Chopra, Baywatch tries too hard in bringing out the humour that it forgets its core purpose of a lifeguard story.

In this reboot, Johnson takes on the role of beach lifeguard, Lieutenant Mitch Buchannon who heads the team of lifeguards at Miami beach. During a recruitment, three newbies join the team - an aspiring lifeguard Summer Quinn (Alexandra Daddario); the corpulent Ronnie (Jon Bass); and the ex-Olympic swimmer with a brash attitude, Matt Brody (Zac Efron).

After a series of training exercises, Mitch soon finds a new drug that is riddling the shores, and it appears to be the start of a drug syndicate that operates around the beach. Mitch suspects Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra), the glamorous new business owner of a hotel nearby the beach. He gathers his crew to investigate the case but soon realises that there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Johnson has a knack for comedy, which we’ve witnessed his comical front in ‘Central Intelligence’, pairing with Zac Efron who has appeared in a handful of slapstick, ‘bro humour’-like comedies such as ‘Neighbours’ and ‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates’, you would expect some kind of heavenly comedic pairing. While it does meet expectations, the jokes felt like something you’ve definitely heard from recent Hollywood B-rated comedies. Of course, the running joke between the duo is the name-calling that Mitch has on Matt, like ‘One Direction’, ‘Malibu Ken’ and a fan-favourite, ‘High School Musical’.

Meanwhile, the female protagonists, played by Kelly Rohrbach, Alexandra Daddario and Ilfenesh Hadera, are nothing more than eye candies targeted at a pool of male audiences with its too-tight, too high-cut swimsuits running along the beach in slo-mo. Though, one will argue that Baywatch is essentially known for its slow motion running and close-up shots of babes and hot dudes.

Surprising, it wasn’t Johnson who stole the show, or the highly-raved Chopra -whom I thought was stunning in her role- but it was the unassuming Jon Bass, who reminds one of a younger version of Josh Gad. Perhaps his unexpected association with a lifeguard makes him an interesting addition to the plot’s humour and of course, that little motivational message of a nerdy guy who is able to win the heart of the hot lifeguard girl.

The Baywatch reboot wouldn’t be complete without an appearance from David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, the original cast of the television series. Though their appearances seemed very forced, it does add a little excitement to the paper-thin storyline.
