The star-studded awards show 'Star Awards 2014' concluded last night with glitz, glamour and unexpected surprises!
Though the first batch of awards went to most of the creatives behind the camera, the stars were nothing short of beautiful and suave as fans cheered for their favourites.
Top 5 Show Highlights
5. The 'Selfies Fever' Carries On
We can't say for sure that Ellen DeGeneres was the one who spearheaded the 'Award Ceremony Selfie' movement, but after that record-breaking selfie at the Oscars, we can't deny she contributed to the 'selfie fever'. Can we also add that the entire #butfirstletmetakeaselfie trend adds to the this 'selfie generation'?
Yesterday at the Star Awards show, stars were not holding back when it came to posing for selfies and posting them on their social media platforms. Oh yes, who would have thought, a selfie rod of course!
4. New Award Categories
New award categories were introduced this year such as the 'Social Media Award' and 'Regional Most Popular Award' (China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia) .
Though there wasn't any nomination list as to who could have possibly bagged the 'Social Media Award', Jeanette Aw emerged as the winner, beating hot favourites (who we thought could have won) such as Ian Fang, Jayley Woo, Desmond Tan and Rebecca Lim.
During the interview with Aw, she said that the social media platforms are managed by herself and uses it as a way to directly converse and interact with her fans. Her favourite platform you may ask? - Instagram! With over 50k followers on Twitter (@Jeanette_Aw) and nearly 58k followers on Instagram (@jeanetteaw_xuan), there's no wonder why this starlet triumphed at this category.
"You can upload photos and text at the same time and you're not limited to the number of words you can post. I can even write an essay to accompany my photo", she quipped.
The Regional Most Popular Awards went to Yvonne Lim, Rui En and Jeanette Aw for their popularity in China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Cambodia respectively, with Rui En bagging two awards for Indonesia and Malaysia.
3. 8 Dukes of Caldecott Hill
After '7 Princesses of MediaCorp' comes the '8 Dukes of Caldecott Hill'! This group was assembled rather quickly, during the segment of 'My Favourite Male Character' winner announcement. What came as a passing remark of the hosts quickly became a hot topic among the media backstage.
Comprising of up-and-coming young hunks, Aloysius Pang, Xu Bin, Shane Pow, Romeo Tan, Desmond Tan, Jeffrey Xu, Ian Fang and Zhang Zhen Huan are your 8 'dukes' who you'll be seeing more often.
"I think it's good to be part of it, part of a team. I'm looking forward to see something develop with the 8 of us. I think having a drama with all 8 of us could be quite interesting," said Desmond Tan who is in the running for the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste which will be revealed next week.
Aloysius Pang who was nominated for 'My Favourite Male Character' for his role in 'I'm In Charge' commented, "All eight of us are quite different in our own ways. We all have different personalities and I'm thankful to be a part of it."
2. A Surprise Win
Perhaps the most unexpected win of the night went to Priscelia Chan for her Rocket Award achievement. The Rocket Award recognises the efforts of an actor who have made a vast improvement in the past year. Many who have caught the blockbuster would have agreed that Priscelia Chan's performance in 'The Journey: A Voyage" was nothing less than admirable.
Chan herself, was caught off-guard when the winner was announced, who was seen texting on her phone when the camera panned to her. "I thought the younger ones would be winning the award. I really didn't expect that", she said.
Our interview with Chan backstage was frequently interrupted as many of her friends couldn't wait to share their joy with her, hugging and congratulating the actress. "I think the most beautiful moment is like this, where friends, colleagues, artiste friends come up to you and are really happy for your win", she continued.
"This is really an award that you can see my tears, my sweat, my hard work. You just have to go with your passion, your job as an actress is to give your role the soul."
1. The Biggest Winner Went To...
It's safe to say that the biggest winner of Star Awards 20 Show 1 was Jeanette Aw who snagged four awards at the 3-hour award ceremony.
She won the Favourite Female Character (Zhao Fei'er) in 'The Dream Makers', Favourite Onscreen Couple (with Qi Yi Wu) for 'The Dream Makers', the Social Media Award and Regional Most Popular Artiste (Cambodia).
