Expect the Unexpected at Le Noir!

Moments of heaves, gasps and ‘OMG’ (Oh My God!) are what you can expect to hear during Le Noir, the thrilling cirque style performance at the MasterCard theatres at Marina Bay Sands this June.

Back for the 2nd time, the smash hit returns with more adrenaline pumping acts that will have you at the edge of your seats. In addition to new routines and choreography, one of the world’s most complex circus stunts - The Wheel Of Death is introduced to this year’s production. InCinemas was fortunate to witness this death-defying act right before our eyes and we couldn’t be more impressed by what we’ve seen.

We talked to Angelo Lyerzkysky Rodriguez and Carlos Mayorga, the two men behind the gigantic moving wheels in The Wheel Of Death. Being the highlight act of the production, Rodriguez admitted to feeling ‘pressured’ by it.

“It’s our first time performing for the Singapore audience and we don’t know how they will react to it,” said Rodriguez who has been performing in the act for 8 years. Together with his partner, they trained for several years and fortunately have not sustained any injuries while practising on one of the most difficult circus acts of all time. “We don’t think much about anything when we’re up there, we just make sure that we work together on our performance,” Rodriguez added.

Though it was a small crowd at the media call last week, we couldn’t escape the little whispers and gasps from the audience as we watched the two Columbian stunt performers performing high-risk feats atop and inside a pair of spinning wheels high above the stage without any harness wrapped around their bodies, nor cushioned mats prepared on the ground. If that doesn’t scare you enough, one of the performer made our hearts stopped when he decided to skip atop the wheel when it hit the highest point. We even heard someone telling her partner ‘Oh my God I can’t see, is he crazy?’

Yes we think so too! Crazy acts, crazy performances and an ensemble doing crazily-mind boggling stunts. Le Noir is engineered in such a way that the audience are pulled to be a part of the entertainment, bringing them physically closer to the artists than any other show. Seats are rearranged in the theatre where you can get very, very close to the performers in this intimate setting.

In addition, the content is beautiful and seductive in its own ways, at times hilariously risque, thanks to the clown of the show, inciting laughter and all-round entertainment in-between segments. We also caught a short preview of two other acts - Aerial Lira and Hand Balance by award-winning cirque performers.

Australian Aerial Hoop performer Thomas Worrell shared that he looks forward to audiences’ reaction in every show, and the applause thereafter. “It just feels so great to hear the audience applause after you’ve done something so difficult and tiring, and to feel the appreciation for it is a very good feeling,’ Worrell chuckled.

Also performing for the first time with Le Noir is two-time Acrobatic Gymnastics World Champion Shenea Booth who cited ‘costuming’ as one of the challenges she faced during her performance. “I have to wear something that has to adapt to so many unique movements within a short period of time.” As a hand balance performer for over 20 years, keeping in shape meant strict daily practice regime and stretching at the airport while waiting for flights.

With incredible demonstrations of balance, contortion, stamina and aerial artistry, the skills exhibited by the cast of Le Noir make this a show that audiences won’t want to miss.
