InCinemas: Hi Mr Yoong, can you tell us more about Dolby Atmos? How is it different from other sound systems?
Mr Yoong: Dolby Atmos unleashes the potential of sound in storytelling by giving filmmakers the creative freedom to easily place or move sounds anywhere in the movie theatre to create a lifelike, virtual reality of sound and the most engaging cinema experience ever. Dolby Atmos has quickly become the preferred choice for next-generation cinema sound among major studios, award-winning filmmakers, and exhibitors around the world.
InCinemas: This is a new sound technology that brings the cinematic experience to a new level, how do you think this has changed the way we enjoy movies in the theatres?
Mr Yoong: With moviegoers becoming more discerning and sophisticated, Dolby has created this phenomenal audio experience to remain ahead of the curve. In an auditorium equipped with Dolby Atmos, audiences will feel like they have entered a new world of sound.

InCinemas: What are some the main features of Dolby Atmos moviegoers should look out for?

Dolby Atmos goes far beyond surround sound to create a new level of realism for moviegoers. In a movie with Dolby Atmos, cinema sound moves around the theatre to match what you see on the screen.
2. Overhead Speakers for Added Realism
Cinemas equipped for Dolby Atmos have overhead speakers that heighten the realism. Rain on a roof, airplanes taking off—moviegoers will hear the sounds exactly where they would be in real life.

Dolby Atmos give filmmakers full creative control over the placement and movement of sound around the audience. No matter the size of the theatre, moviegoers will always see and hear the full realization of their creative visions.
4. Independently Controlled Speakers
Theatres equipped for Dolby Atmos employ up to 64 independently controlled speakers. Moviegoers will hear extraordinary power and impact when the director calls for it. Moviegoers will also hear the most subtle details with amazing clarity.
InCinemas: What do you enjoy most when watching a movie mixed in Dolby Atmos? Any specific scenes/movie you have watched?
Mr Yoong: Drawing references from the recent blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow, from military aircrafts and alien missiles ‘flying’ above the audience, using the overhead speakers that are installed in cinema auditoriums to highly detailed, pinpoint accurate gunshots and helicopter blades, spinning around the auditorium, Dolby Atmos allowed the sound story to be told with wonderful detail.
InCinemas: Dolby Atmos started out with Pixar’s BRAVE (2012) and have produced over 100 films with this technology. What has evolved in these 2 years?
Mr Yoong: Introduced in April 2012, Dolby Atmos has been embraced by all the major Hollywood studios, seven Academy Award® winning directors, and 16 Academy Award winning sound mixers, among others. As of 25 July, more than 600 Dolby Atmos screens have been installed or committed to in 40 countries with more than 150 exhibitor partners. More than 100 films from 12 different countries have been or are scheduled to be released with Dolby Atmos sound since the first film debuted in June 2012.
InCinemas: We read that Dolby Atmos will soon be coming to home theatres, how similar or different will that be from the cinemas?
Mr Yoong: Dolby Atmos is the first home theater system that is based not on channels, but on audio objects. Dolby Atmos is also far more flexible and adaptable than channel-based home theater. In a channel-based system with channel-based content, the number of speakers is fixed—a 7.1 system always consists of seven speakers and one subwoofer. With Dolby Atmos, in contrast, you have amazing flexibility: you can get the full experience with just seven speakers or get an even richer, more detailed sound by adding more speakers. As you add speakers, a Dolby Atmos enabled receiver will automatically determine how to use them to create fantastic, immersive audio.
