Talk about Horsepower in Cavalia!

By InCinemas  /  19 Aug 2014 (Tuesday)

When one thinks of Cavalia, perhaps it’s the visual image of 50 majestic horses galloping around comes to mind. While that is certainly true, what makes Cavalia even more outstanding is the combination on both performers and trained horses.

Part circus part equestrian, the two-hour show promises the oohs and aahs, the never-ending cheers and plenty of entertainment.

Cavalia

Created by Normand Latourelle, co-founder of Cirque du Soleil, Cavalia is the largest touring tent in the world, a multi-disciplinary theatrical production incorporating different acts like acrobatics, aerial stunts, dance and of course, the various exhilarating performances of the horses with their trainers.

At first glance, the performance area may not seem that large of a space for horses to gallop freely, but when you start to notice the ratio between a human standing in front, to the space allocated, it’s pretty clear what you’re in for. Let’s not forget it is home to the 50 four-legged performers where they ‘rest and relax’ after each performance.

The set up includes a 60-metre-wide screen that displays dream-like virtual environments - a lush forest, a sandy desert and water-like patterns towards the end of the show.

The acrobats never ceases to amaze me as they swing from one end of the stage to the other, or how 13 men execute continuous back flips one after another. The focus of the show may be about the horses, but there are some acts that truly stood out, reaffirming the relationship between horses and men. It was a perfect combination of love, power and compassion.

The 2nd-half of the show is where it gets really interesting. I personally loved a short 10 minute segment of riders displaying stunts on the horses back; some flipping over, while others stood up, all while the horses are galloping at full speed. To call it breathtaking would be an understatement. The creators even added an ‘awww’ moment. Don’t miss it!

InCinemas talked to choreographer Alain Gauthier on his vision on bringing Cavalia to live. "We try out different sequences with the performers and horses to see if it fits the theme of Cavalia and how it will look on stage."

You don’t have to love horses to enjoy Cavalia, neither do you have to like circus acts to find it entertaining. Cavalia is a world-class performance that is worth your every dollar.
