themes.

The key festival highlight this year is Salaam Bombay! (1988) by Mira Nair, the first Indian film to win the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The film’s screenwriter, Sooni Taraporevala, will make a post-screening appearance to discuss the film. In an additional talk, Taraporevala will share her experiences on set and present a series of photographs she shot in the gritty streets and alleys whilst working on Salaam Bombay!
The festival’s opening film, Short Term 12 (2013) was inspired by director Destin Daniel Cretton’s personal experience working in a facility for troubled teens. The film received acclaim at South by Southwest Film Festival, winning both the Grand Jury and Audience Award for Narrative Feature. The film also won accolades at the Locarno International Film Festival, being nominated for the Golden Leopard, and winning Best Actress for indie-darling Brie Larson.
John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) will make its Singapore premiere during the festival. Originally based on an off-Broadway production, the film currently enjoys renewed success as a four-time Tony Award-winning Broadway revival starring Neil Patrick Harris.
As part of the festival, there will be a series of workshops and talks in the weeks leading up to and during the festival. These events will further explore the theme of displacement with relevance to Singapore’s multi-cultural society and ever-changing urban landscape. Perspectives will be collaborating with local visual arts centre Objectifs, to feature prolific filmmaker Jasmine Ng (Eating Air, Pink Paddlers). Ng will be presenting on how film can be utilised to kick-start social change.
Stay tuned to InCinemas for we'll be giving away tickets soon!
