1) Stellar Cast
In a big musical production like Beauty and the Beast, it’s easy to focus on the two leads - Belle and Beast, and while these two delivered solid-gold performances, the supporting cast and ensemble dazzled on stage with show-stopping song numbers.
Playing the Disney princess Belle is the beautiful Hilary Mailberger who possesses a crystal-like, Disney princess-quality voice you’ll grow to love. Her ‘A Change in Me’ was one of the best songs of the night in terms of vocal performances.
Sidekick to Gaston, Lefou is the underdog that provides the slapstick comedy with tumbles and pratfalls; the physical comedy in this musical. He may seem like the ‘loser’ of the team, but is the actual dynamo that pushes the tempo and mood of the musical.
2) Amazing Choreographies
The climax and probably the most exciting part of the musical is the ‘Be Our Guest’ performance where it’s not only technically challenging, the entire musical number is visually colourful. Expect something along the lines of fusing set pieces to props where cast members ‘pluck’ plates and bowls, then turning them into top hats and finally pulling off a can-can ensemble performance after the physically demanding choreography. In that few 5 minutes or so, it was simply mesmerising to watch surprises pouring one after and another, I almost leaped out of my seat with a standing ovation.
3) Timeless Songs that Make You Sing Along
If you’re already humming the famous ‘Beauty and the Beast’ tune even before the watching the musical, trust me when I say you will be singing along when Emily Mattheson (Mrs Potts) croons the beautiful and familiar song while watching Belle and Beast dance for the first time. That iconic song cannot be more beautiful when heard live.
If that’s not enough to get you into this fairytale mood, Hilary Mailberger’s solo performances of ‘Home’ and ‘A Change In Me’ will do the job.
4) A True Disney Classic that Lives on
It doesn’t matter if you’re die-hard fan of Disney’s fairytale classics or a one who just simply enjoys live performances, this musical adaptation of the motion picture has proven to be well-loved by people of all ages, having played to more than 35 million people around the world.
This is the first-ever international tour and Singapore is one of the tour stops to be able to enjoy this spectacular musical. Don’t miss it.
