TV and stage actress Oon Shu An plays a Japanese AV star in Han Yew Kwang’s sex comedy ‘Rubbers’, where she had to don sexy lingerie and get into different positions to simulate sex scenes with co-star Alaric Tay.
At the press conference at Orchard Hotel yesterday, director Han shared that there was a flashback scene which depicted Oon’s character, Momoko, making love to men. “Nearing to the date of that shoot, Shu An was concerned as to who would be her partner and suggested her boyfriend to do the scene with her instead… and he’s really spotting!”
He added: “The three of us were discussing the scene very seriously, like how it should be done to the details as to the speed of the ‘action’.”
“My boyfriend is not an actor, he’s a photographer… but that one no need to act lah,” joked the 28-year-old actress.
It’s safe to say that playing Momoko is Oon’s most daring role to date and accepting it came with discussions with her parents and boyfriend.
“Even after he (Han Yew Kwang) gave me the script and explained what I was going to do, I was still like ‘What? You want me to what? I could not get my head around it.’ Some of the considerations I had were mainly how my family and some of my Instagram followers would react.
It’s because I do this online show ‘Tried and Tested’ where it reaches out to a much younger audience; but what I try and be clear about is who I am as a person is very different from what I do in my job. As long as I think that if the conversation is managed then it's okay.”

She added: “When it comes roles that the people close to me might have an issue with, I will always talk to them beforehand. For Rubbers, I talked to my mom and left it to her to tell my dad. My boyfriend is more open-minded than I am. He read it (the script) and thought it was very funny... he loved it! So I cleared all those first before accepting it.”
As to whether she hopes her parents would watch the film when it comes out in theatres on 30 April 2015, Oon is conflicted.
“I want my parents to watch the movie because of the story between Marcus and Catherine, but then I don't want them to watch the my part. I mean they know about it, but I'm not sure if they want to see it.”
Rubbers also stars Yeo Yann Yann, Julian Hee, Marcus Chin, Catherine Sng and Alaric Tay, and opens InCinemas 30 April 2015.
