‘Cars 2′ Trailer #3 Promises Lots of Colorful, Kid-Friendly Antics

A third trailer has been released for Pixar’s sequel ‘Cars 2′, which follows Lightning McQueen and Mater on a new adventure that includes a globe-trotting race and a secret spy mission.

Pixar will take a break from making both kids and adults cry (thank you, Up and Toy Story 3) by releasing the fast and not-so-furious sequel, Cars 2. The followup to one of the animation company’s more profitable hits once again features Owen Wilson as the voice of red-hot racing stud Lightning McQueen -- and comedian Larry the Cable Guy as his lovable (red neck? red engine?) comrade, Mater.

A third and final theatrical trailer has been released for the film, which will include a whole host of new and colorful automobiles (check out our complete Cars 2 character guide) from different regions of the world.

English thespians Michael Caine and Emily Mortimer are also onboard for Cars 2, providing the vocals for the (literally) shiny spy cars Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell, respectively. It’s these two autos who mistake Mater for being a capable American secret agent -- and thus, plenty of wacky hijinks ensue.

Check out the third trailer for Cars 2 (via iTunes Movie Trailers) below:

Those who have grown accustomed to Pixar films tackling more complex and adult themes will probably be a bit disappointed by the Cars sequel. It’s solid but simple messages about friendship, loyalty, and believing in yourself -- in combination with bright and cartoony nature of the Cars universe -- could seem like a bit of a step back for the computer-animation house.

On the flip side: the visuals in Cars 2 appear to be as eye-catching and colorful as anything the studio has done before. Families will likely appreciate being able to take their kids to see a Pixar movie that features a whole lot of innocent jokes and decent life lessons -- and not a film that forces them to watch their favorite characters suffer from an existential crisis or confront the reality of their own mortality (that’s a bit much for the little ones).

All in all, the Cars sequel should make for a decent afternoon at the cinema -- so long as you approach it as a light-hearted bit of summer fun and less as another emotionally-stirring tale from Pixar.

Cars 2 hits Singapore in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters on 25 August 2011.
