Japanese Live-action Blockbuster 'Attack on Titan' to Release in M18 & NC16 Formats!

By InCinemas  /  05 Aug 2015 (Wednesday)

The highly-anticipated Japanese live-action blockbuster, Attack on Titan (Part 1) will be releasing in two formats simultaneously, and the first Asian film to be released in D-Box!

Sneak previews will be held from 6-10 August, during the National Day long weekend!

Adapted from the hit manga series written and illustrated by Isayama Hajime, Attack on Titan is an “extreme scale” live-action movie that has created intense hype even before it is released. This dark fantasy is set in an apocalyptic world where humanity is caged behind enormous walls as a defence against the Titans, gigantic humanoid creatures that devour humans.

Two versions of the movie, M18 (Original Version) & NC16 (Edited Version), will be released simultaneously in various cinemas island-wide during sneaks and official release in Singapore. This is the first time that a movie will release with simultaneous rating in Singapore.

“We hope that by releasing the NC16 version, younger fans are also given the opportunity to watch the movie that they’ve anticipated for so long. At the same time, the M18 original (un-cut) version is screened as well so as not to disappoint fans who are 18 and above.” said Joyce Lee, Managing Director, Encore Films.

The disparities between the M18 and NC16 ratings are mainly on the 'gore and violence' depicted in the movie, with a 1-minute difference in movie runtime.

According to Media Development Authority's (MDA) film classification website, the scenes that were cut are described as:

"Violence depicted in the film mainly takes the form of the Titans devouring human beings and of the latter retaliating with weapons such as swords and gunscannons. While some of the scenes are realistically portrayed with details of infliction of pain, blood and gore, they are not gratuitous or exploitative. Such portrayals are permissible under the M18 Classification Guidelines which state “realistic depictions of violence and gore with strong impact is allowed if justified by context.”

Attack on Titan is directed by world-renowned director Shinji Higuchi, who also directed the epic blockbuster “The Sinking of Japan” in 2006. The film also stars famous and in-demand young stars Haruma Miura, Kiko Mizuhara and Kanata Hongo.

Attack on Titan opens InCinemas 13 August 2015. The sequel, Attack On Titan 2: End of the World will open InCinemas 24 September 2015!
