7th June 2011 is a significant date for Zonbo Media and Homerun Asia as it marks their China-Singapore collaboration. Chen Weiming, the Founder and Chairman of Zonbo Media notes that in the next three years, both companies will invest RMB 400-500 million (approx. SG$75-95 million) in at least 5 commercial Asian films, including Dangerous Liaisons and 1965!
A strategic partnership signing ceremony was held on Tuesday (7th June) at Capella Hotel and the attendees include:
Chen Weiming, the Founder and Chairman of Zonbo Media,
Daniel Yun, the Founder and CEO of Homerun Asia,
Yeo Chun Cheng, Chief Information Officer MDA,
Lee Thean-jeen, Director of 'Homecoming' & TV series 'The Pupil'
and Hur Jin-ho, Director of 'Christmas In August' & 'One Fine Spring Day'
During the press conference, Daniel Yun is clear in emphasizing the dynamics of both movies on Asia as a whole. He points out that the movie director of Dangerous Liaison (Hur Jin-ho) is from Korea and the cast is from parts of Asia. "If you look at the two films we are announcing today, the whole dynamics and DNA of such films spell Asia, Asia, Asia."
He is quick to note that although 1965 is about the founding of Singapore, it is not a political film. Daniel feels that more importantly, it is on how the people feel during that time and how immigrants had their concerns in calling an island as their Home.
Many Singaporeans would be curious about the upcoming movie 1965, especially the casting as it is certain that someone will be starring as Lee Kuan Yew. Even the Founder and Chairman of Zonbo Media is looking forward to find out who will be the one acting as the founding father of Singapore.
At this point of time, not much was revealed as the production team is still going through the casting this month. However, Daniel hinted that the actor will have to be somebody who is 'fiery' and there is only a few in Asia to be considered.
Lee Thean-jeen also took the opportunity to speak about the film during the press conference. He told the media that he actually commited in his mind to the project when Daniel first spoke to him about the movie. "It is a time of a lot of human drama and sweeping political changes. People based on important choices which will affect for the rest of their lives."
Interestingly, Thean-jeen also make references to the year 2011 and the flood on Sunday. "What is interesting is right now, we are also going through an interesting time. If any of you are out in Orchard Road on Sunday will know that we're seeing things we've never seen before probably since independence."
"Like Daniel have said it's not a political film. Even more than that, 1965 is really at its heart as a human social drama," the director concluded.
1965 is pre-production phase and the shooting locations are likely to be in Singapore, Malaysia and China. Lee Thean-jeen also hopes that when 1965 releases, it will meet the people's expectation.
