Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the #1 Film of All-time in the U.S!

By Flora  /  08 Jan 2016 (Friday)
Updated [9.1.16] - Star Wars: The Force Awakens beats Skyfall to be the biggest movie of all time in the UK.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has broken the record to be the highest-grossing domestic film of all-time in North America, surpassing Avatar's US$760.5 million in just 20 days!

As of today, (8 Jan 2016), the film has grossed US$4764.4 million, and is said to cross the US$800 millionth mark by this weekend.

Apart from the many records that the 7th installment of the sci-fi series has broken since it's international release, it is said that the film might ultimately be able to dethrone James Cameron's 'Avatar' to be the highest-grossing film worldwide. Cameron's film raked in US$2.78 billion, but do keep in mind that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has yet to open in China (9th Jan), and when it does, expect Star Wars to soar up in its international rankings.

In the UK, another big market for Disney, it seems that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is on track to be the highest-grossing film of all time in the UK. 007's 'Skyfall' is currently holding the top title with earnings of £103m in 2012, but within a mere three-week release, J. J. Abrams' film has knocked Avatar from its spot from second place with £97.6m.

*Upate: Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the UK and Ireland’s biggest ever cinematic release. The film, which has only been on release for 22 days, has today overtaken Skyfall’s £103.2million in the UK and earlier this week became the second in history to reach £100million in the UK.

Locally, the film has grossed over US$6.3 million through its 3rd week of release.
