Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the Highest-Grossing IMAX Movie Ever in Singapore!

30 Jan 2016 (Saturday)
The IMAX release of
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
hit S$1 Million in IMAX box office takings earlier this week, making it the biggest and most popular IMAX movie in Singapore since the opening of the first IMAX theatre in May 2011.
The film has now grossed more than US$200 Million in IMAX theatres worldwide, making it the company’s second highest-grossing film of all time behind Avatar. The film also set several IMAX records throughout its run, including the biggest IMAX opening weekend worldwide (US$48 Million) and in North America (US$ 30 Million), and was the fastest to reach both the US$100 Million and US$200 Million milestones.
Mr. Mark Shaw, Executive Vice President of Operations, Shaw Theatres, said: “We have a growing IMAX fan base and we are seeing more of our patrons choosing IMAX® 3D over our regular 3D offerings. These sophisticated patrons desire the best movie-going experience and consider IMAX’s environment of crystal-clear images, customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio as quality and value for their money.” He added: “IMAX has contributed to revitalizing the Shaw Theatres brand and has created a new revenue stream for us as well. The success of IMAX at Lido and JCube has prompted us to launch our third IMAX screen at the newly opened Shaw Theatres Waterway Point, and we are actively looking for a suitable new location for our next IMAX theatre.”
(Read more about the new IMAX theatre at Waterway Point, Punggol!)
There are only three Shaw Theatres IMAX screens in Singapore currently. The first opened at Shaw Theatres Lido in Orchard Road in May 2011, the second at Shaw Theatres JCube in Jurong East in April 2012, and the third at Shaw Theatres Waterway Point in Punggol last Thursday.
The next few movies to be released in IMAX are
The Revenant
(4 February),
Deadpool
(11 February),
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
(24 March) and
Marvel's Captain America: Civil War
(28 April). The latter two will feature select
footage shot with IMAX® cameras.
For those who wants to catch
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
for the
x-
th time, the blockbuster will be playing at all Shaw Theatres IMAX locations until 3 February 2016.
