Review: Cirque Adrenaline Lives Up to Its Name

Singapore is a very safe place. It is something we often take for granted, but it also creates a hunger for something more exciting. You don’t have to go very far because Cirque Adrenaline will be pumping, well, adrenaline into your veins.
Read this description of the show. I usually take such a hyperbole-filled description with a huge dollop of salt. After watching the show, though, I find this one to be particularly accurate.

Cirque Adrenaline is a jaw-clenching show featuring the world's most dangerous and death-defying theatrical acts, guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping. The world's most exciting theatrical show will include heart-stopping motorbike stunts, high-flying trapeze artists, strong men, aerial acrobatic displays and a blazing fire act to heat up your holiday season.
The whole show is thrilling and surprisingly very theatrical. There is a certainly a good variety of acts with different types and acts, from grander ones such as the Sphere of Fear or even one-man shows such as a juggling act. Each of them is an impressive feat, inciting applauses and awe from the audience throughout the 2 hours. It was no surprise to see standing ovations all around during the curtain call.

I will not be spoiling too much about the acts. Part of the excitement is not knowing what’s the next act, but knowing that each will be just as awe-inspiring as the last. The audience favourite seems to be the Wheel of Death, which has been performed in Singapore before but brought back due to its popularity. When you thought the dangerous act had peaked, they topped it with something even more death-defying. I could hear gasps and “Oh my God”s throughout.
The Sphere of Fear.
The theatrical quality of the show cannot be understated. One jaw-dropping stunt after another was enriched with appropriate lighting and music that lends to a sense of scale even when the stage is bare. You would even find dancing, bits of stories, and acting. They are not merely acrobats or daredevils. They are performers.
Another audience favourite is the clown who provides comedic breaks in between the death-defying acts. At times he would even invite audience members to come up on stage. He does magic as well, and never fails to make the theatre burst into laughter.

My only qualm is that the spotlight is too fond of shining directly at the faces of the audience sometimes. This was especially for the first few acts, although this is not too disruptive for most of the show’s duration.
It is the kind of show that is worth watching live in the front seats. There is a charm in actually looking at the acts up close knowing that there is no hidden wire or mattress to protect the performers on the stage. There are no tricks here, just incredibly talented performers. And of course, there is a chance that the clown might invite you to join him on the stage. That would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
