Twenty For The Price Of One at 'Three Phantoms'

Seven world-class Broadway and West End stars will perform their favourite songs from twenty musicals at the MES Mediacorp Theatre on 12 and 13 May this year. This concert is directed and devised in 2008 by Earl Carpenter, who has performed the titular role in ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ over 1,000 times and performed as Inspector Javert in ‘Les Misérables’ in Singapore last year.

Why Phantoms? It turns out that Carpenter has a very personal story with the musical. “It was the very first musical that I actually listened to as a child. I remember my father buying the double cassette of Michael Crawford singing ‘The Phantom of The Opera’. And ten years from receiving that cassette to actually then playing the role itself was an incredible journey.”

He will be joined on stage by other performers including Kieran Brown, David Shannon, Alistair Barron, Lisa-Anne Wood, Marisa McIntyre, and Olivia Brereton. The first three names have also played the masked musician, while Brereton and Wood have portrayed Christine, Phantom’s love interest in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous musical.

A Night At The Musicals With Three Phantoms
Date: Fri, 12 - Sat, 13 May 2017
Time: 7.30pm
Venue: MES Theatre at Mediacorp, 1 Stars Avenue, Singapore 138507
Ticket Price: $68 - $158

While musical concerts like this one might be considered rigid and overly serious, Carpenter assures us that ‘Three Phantoms’ is not such a concert.

“The entire evening is not formal. It’s very informal; it’s very relaxed. We sing some fantastic numbers. We sing them as well as possibly can. And the bits in between, it’s driven by some very interesting kind of anecdotes, relationships, all of us. It’s all about what we do as a group, it’s not stuffy. It’s nothing about that. We entice the audience to have as much fun as possible.”

Earl Carpenter and Olivia Brereton, who performed a duet from 'Spamalot'

The concert will also feature songs from Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Mamma Mia!, Cats, We Will Rock You, Spamalot, Chess, and Wicked.

“We hope that all the musicals will be singing, everyone will be singing along, maybe, who knows?”
