Based on the popular 1992 film comedy of the same name, ‘Sister Act’ tells the story of a wannabe diva Deloris Van Cartier (Dené Hill) who witnesses her boyfriend Curtis (Brandon Godfrey) commit a murder. She then reports the crime to the police, and, for her protection, is put in the one place the police is sure she will not be found - a convent.
The story unfolds at the convent where Deloris faces the strict and uptight Mother Superior (Rebecca Mason-Wygal). At the same time, against all odds, friendship blossoms between Deloris and the other nuns, including the bubbly Sister Mary Patrick (Emma Brock) and the timid Sister Mary Robert (Sophie Kim). With her fantastic voice and vibrant performing style, Deloris breathes new life into the convent’s choir and transforms them into a musical sensation, attracting overwhelming public attention. However, in doing so, her cover is exposed and Deloris, once again, finds herself running for her life.
‘Sister Act’ features original scores by 8-time Oscar winner Alan Menken with lyrics written by Glenn Slater. The musical opens on a high note with Deloris performing ‘Take Me To Heaven’ at a nightclub. The performance energises the audience from the get-go and sets the upbeat tone for the rest of the show. It also creates an arresting first impression of Deloris’s animated, almost diva-like personality. The joyous mood of ‘Take Me To Heaven’ is maintained throughout the musical, and reaches its climax in the finale “Spread The Love Around”. The fabulous glittery costumes, as well as animated dance numbers, will surely get the audience cheering and clapping along.
While Dené Hill as the feisty and passionate Deloris is without a doubt the star of the show, the supporting cast of ‘Sister Act’ is remarkable in their own right. Sophie Kim stands out in her role as the soft-spoken Sister Mary Robert whose journey to find her voice receives much love and empathy from the audience. Mother Superior, with her inner turmoil about maintaining the convent’s traditions, provides the otherwise cheerful musical with more tender, introspective moments such as her touching performance of “I Haven’t Got A Prayer”. Curtis and his gangs including TJ, Joel and Pablo, will surely make you laugh with their playful and witty banters.
Overall, ’Sister Act’ more than lives up to the praises from critics and the public alike. Both dazzling and heart-warming, it is everything a feel-good, high-spirited musical should be.
