Spider-Man in Singapore: Tom Holland Wants to Bring a Youthful Approach to ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’.

“It’s really interesting to see what happens when you give a 15-year-old kid superpowers,’ said Tom Holland, who plays the iconic superhero Spider-Man in the upcoming movie ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’.

He is in town together with his co-star Jacob Batalon - who plays Ned Leeds - to promote the Marvel-Sony film.

Taking over the reins from former on-screen Spideys (Tobey Maguire (2002, 2004), Andrew Garfield (2012, 2014)) is never an easy task. For the 21-year-old British actor, he admits that it is a daunting task for him, but is glad that ‘Sony and Marvel are behind us to just sort of guide us to the right path’.

“There’s some responsibility there to get it right,” says Holland at the press conference held at the ArtScience Museum, last night.

“It was very important for me to make this character different from the previous two versions and the way we done that is sort of ground this character in reality. Now you see is what happens if a kid got superpowers and there’s just really fun dynamics because you gave a 15-year-old superpowers that he will have the time of his life… It was just a really fantastic process.”

He added: “We gave a much younger, a much youthful version of it.”

This is the first time these two young actors are in Singapore, and the sweltering heat didn’t stop them from having a blast in the sunny island. From their Instagram accounts, they’ve been taking a dip at the Marina Bay Sands’ Infinity Pool, as well as a bit of golfing during their free time.

At the red carpet, they were greeted with super Spider-Man fans, many who turned up in full Spider-Man costumes to welcome the star. Some lucky fans even got the chance to snap selfies and wefies with our friendly neighbourhood superhero!

“It’s really hot here, man!… I’m just not used to that kind of heat” quipped Holland. “When we shot the movie in Atlanta, it was a similar weather and I’ll be in the suit all day working. It was tough, but you look so bada** in it that it doesn’t really make a difference. You love it.”

In Spider-Man: Homecoming, which opens here on 6th July, Peter Parker learns the ropes of his newfound superhero job from Iron Man/Tony Stark who is played by Robert Downey Jr.. Holland, who first worked with Downey Jr. in ‘Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War’ says that “He (Downey Jr.) is truly one of the kindest people.

“The best piece of advice from Robert Downey. Jr isn’t something that he told me, but is something that I had seen and watched him do throughout in the process of this movie,” shared Holland.

“Like I said, I consider him to be at the top of his game, at his peak, and if I have the luxury to get there and I should act like he does. He goes (onto set) 10 mins earlier each day, says hi to every crew member. He’s kind, lighthearted and respectful; and just shows me that no matter how famous you get or how much money you make, you should always treat everyone the same and be respectful to everyone… and that’s exactly what Robert does.”
