5 Memorable Speeches from Recent Movies ("Not Korean Drama")

05 Jul 2017 (Wednesday)
There a lot of clips of speeches on the Internet lately. Something about a house? We are not very sure. But here are our compilations of some of our favourite speeches in cinema. If you think grand speeches in movies are a thing of the past, we will stick to movies from this millennium only. Ready?
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) - “Not a perfect soldier, but a good man.”
Captain America is a rather boring superhero with typical stories and super powers. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe gives the first Avenger a lot of heart and heroism even before he bulked up and donned the Vibranium shield. This speech from Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) to Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) explains what makes him so special while giving him an important advice. The serum makes him super, but the speech makes him a hero.
Pacific Rim (2013) - “We are cancelling the apocalypse.”
Just because it is a sci-fi film with kaijus and mechas, it does not mean that ‘Pacific Rim’ has no relatable notes. This succinct inspirational speech by Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) would fit right into any war film when our protagonists are going into a fight when the odds are stacked against them.
The Dark Knight (2008)
- “Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now.”
It is not easy to pick one speech from this endlessly quotable Christopher Nolan film, especially with plenty of great monologues from the late Heath Ledger as The Joker. But we decided to pick this iconic line read by James Gordon (Gary Oldman) as Batman (Christian Bale) takes the fall for the crimes committed by Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) to preserve Gotham city’s hope.
Birdman
(2015)
- “You’re scared to death, like the rest of us, that you don’t matter.”
This hard-hitting speech from Sam (Emma Stone) to his father Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) called him out for doing the play for trying to stay relevant after his acting career died out. Nevertheless, the content was no less relevant to us, whom she described as “an entire world out there where people fight to be relevant every single day.”
Spider-Man (2002) - “With great power comes great responsibility.”
Spider-Mans have come and gone, but this “with great power comes great responsibility” speech has stood the test of time to be one of the most memorable quote in the superhero flicks. It was also a great moment as Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson) tries to reach out to his orphaned teenaged nephew, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) who grew more distant every day.
By the way, the latest iteration of
Spider-Man
is swinging InCinemas on 6 July. You do not have to watch Uncle Ben die in this one.
