Cannes get Enough of these Films this July

By Flora  /  04 Jul 2018 (Wednesday)

This July, the Singapore Film Society (SFS) will be showcasing three critically-acclaimed films that made waves at the international film circuit.

First off, kicking off the month is the critically acclaimed mystery film ‘Burning’ by South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong and stars You Ah-in, Steven Yuen and Jeon Jong-seo. Based on the short story “Barn Burning” by Japanese writer Haruki Murakami and the film won the 2018 Cannes Film Festival FIPRESCI Prize.

Following this are the works of Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda. He won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for his drama film ‘Shoplifters’. The film stars Lily Franky and Sakura Ando and is about a family who is dependent on shoplifting to cope with poverty.

In addition, SFS will also be screening legal thriller "The Third Murder". It is Hirokazu’s previous film that was shown at the 74th Venice International Film Festival. Hirokazu is best known for his 2013 work LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON, where it won the Jury Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

To cap it off, there will be a Retrospective of Indonesian director Mouly Surya this end-July, where all three of her films will be shown. Mouly Surya is an Indonesian filmmaker and is considered one of the most promising female filmmakers in Indonesia. In addition to making films, she also teaches directing classes in Jakarta.

Don’t miss three of her films that will be screened at the retrospective showcase where she will be in attendance for all sessions to talk about her filmmaking process during the post-screening Q&As. The films are: Fiksi - a 2008 thriller and Mouly’s directorial debut; “What They Don’t Talk About When They Talk About Love”, which won the Netpac Award at the 2013 International Film Festival Rotterdam in Netherlands; and Mouly’s most recent work, “Marlina The Murderer In Four Acts”, which was nominated for Queer Palm Award at 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

Head over to SFS' official website for more information on the screenings.
