'Sonic the Hedgedog' is running fast to cinemas near you and running even faster to be redesigned following negative response

By Say Peng  /  03 May 2019 (Friday)

For those of us born in the 1990s, along with Pokemon and Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the games we've played over and over again and has become one of our enduring childhood icons.

By the way, if you've forgotten how the game looks like, here's a blast to the past:

I don't know about you, but that was an epic trip down memory lane.

Back to the topic at hand, naturally we are all excited when we learned back in 2013 that Sony Pictures Entertainment had acquired the rights to Sonic, but then the project was put on the turnaround.

In 2017, Paramount Pictures took over the rights and here we are.

Paramount Pictures released the trailer of 'Sonic the Hedgehog' a few days ago and it has got us very, very excited.

It's no easy feat to render a live-action video game character. I think the visual effects team did a great job, but when the trailer was released, many people did not think so.

As a result, director Jeff Fowler announced on Twitter that his team was going to redesign the character.

Fowler ended his Tweet with the hashtag #gottafixfast. It's a cute reference to Sonic's oft-spoken one-liner "Gotta go fast".

Fowler, who is making his directorial debut with 'Sonic the Hedgehog' and has previously animated Spike Jonze's fantasy drama 'Where the Wild Things Are', has to be commended for his willingness to embrace feedback and criticism.

Here's the other big reason why I'm excited about this movie - Jim Carrey.

It's been ages since we've seen Jim Carrey on the big screen. His last role was in the brooding detective drama 'Dark Crimes'. There certainly was no laughs there.

This time around, Carrey plays Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, your archetypical evil mad scientist. It's a role heaven-made for Carrey, who has played such outlandish character as Bruce Almighty, Count Olaf, Ace Ventura, and the Grinch.

Other than how the new Sonic will look, we all have one more question - when will we get to see Tails and Knuckles?

'Sonic the Hedgehog' will screen in cinemas from 7 November 2019.
