Here are films we think will be nominated for the Oscars for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress

By Say Peng  /  12 Sep 2019 (Thursday)

It's time for Oscar talk!

With the recent conclusion of the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) still ongoing, there are already talks about the films that will be nominated for 2020 Oscars.

For Best Actress, the buzz is swirling around Scarlett Johannson, who gave an intense performance in the searing marriage drama directed by Noah Baumbach.

Thrice-nominated Oscar-winner Renée Zellweger's portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy, directed by Rupert Goold, won her a 3-minute standing ovation when it premiered in TIFF.

Critics are now saying that the Oscars for Best Actress is between Johannson and Zellweger.

But let's not forget the other possible contenders.

Awkwafina gave one of her most moving performances in Lulu Wang's The Farewell. With the Academy voter makeup getting more diversity of late, Awkwafina may become the first Asian-American nominated actress in a long while.

Meryl Streep and Saoirse Ronan will probably also be nominated for their respective roles in Steven Soderbergh's The Laundromat and Greta Gerwig's Little Women.

As for Best Actor, without question, Joaquin Phoenix has entered the field for his unnerving portrayal of the Joker, becoming the top choice to win.

Adam Sandler is also surfacing in Best Actor conversation for his role as a New York City jeweler in Safdie Brothers' Uncut Gems.

Leonard DiCaprio and his buddy Brad Pitt will also, undoubtedly, be nominated for their respective lead roles in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Ad Astra. But we doubt they will actually win.

We suspect Robert de Niro will also be nominated for his role in Martin Scorsese's The Irishman.

These are the films that most probably will be nominated: Avengers: Endgame, Joker, The Irishman, Ad Astra, Marriage Story, 1917.

But which film will win Best Picture is much harder to predict and is currently still an open game.

The Irishman may turn out to be one of Scorsese's best, but its chance to win is dim, given that it's a Netflix film.

Our bet is on Joker. What's yours?
