Icon Of Television and Film Ed Asner, 91, Has Passed Away

By Shafiyqah  /  30 Aug 2021 (Monday)

Ed Asner, a television and film veteran, is confirmed to have passed away on August 30 (SGT). Asner was a well-known actor, activist, and philanthropist during his lifetime. His presence touched many people's hearts, and we are devastated by his death.

This news was announced by his representative on his official Twitter profile which stated:

Ed Asner was born in Kansas City in 1929. Asner's real name is Edward David Asner, and he began his acting career while attending the University of Chicago. He returned to New York after completing his service in the US Army Signal Corps to pursue an acting career. He was a founding member of the Playwrights Theatre Company in Chicago, which was the progenitor to the comedy incubator Second City, early in his career.

In the legendary TV show series The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Ed Asner was recognized for his role as the gruff newsman for laughs and drama. Surely, given his long career in the film industry, even though he didn't appear in many big-titled film, his contribution is substantial.

He also had a longstanding experience of voice acting, having played J.Jonah Jameson in the 1980 Spider-Man series, Roland Daggett in Batman: The Animated Series, and Jedi Master in a Star Wars video game. Notably, he is known for his role as Carl Fredicksen's voice actor in the animated film UP, as Dug Days, a spin-off series, is due to premiere this week on Disney+.

During his time as president of the Screen Actors Guild (SGM), the actor was well-known for battling for the rights of those who are victims of poverty, violence, war, legal and social injustice in the United States and around the world. He was obviously more than just an entertainer. He contributed significantly behind the scenes. Due to his propensity of keeping everything low-profile, this information wasn't really made public.

In 1996, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Additionally, during his career, Asner has won seven Emmy awards and has been nominated for a total of 20 times.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family.
