Where to Watch the Best Picture Nominees of Oscars 2022

The nominations for the 94th Academy Awards are in!

The full announcement took place on Tuesday (8 February) and was hosted by actors Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan. What comes to no surprise is this year’s big celebration of film features a number of contenders from streaming services as the industry finds its footing in a period of great upheaval and transformation due to the ongoing pandemic. To say the least, we've come a long way from the Netflix/Roma controversy.

Here's where you can watch this year's Best Picture nominees:

BELFAST

Belfast is a coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Kenneth Branagh, described as his "most personal film". It centres on a young boy's childhood in Belfast, Northern Ireland at the beginning of The Troubles in 1969. The film stars Caitríona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, Colin Morgan, and newcomer Jude Hill.

The film received seven Oscar nominations – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Hinds), Best Supporting Actress (Dench), Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Song (Van Morrison for "Down to Joy"), and Best Sound.

Belfast is now playing in cinemas.

CODA

CODA is a coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Sian Heder. The film stars Emilia Jones as the eponymous CODA (child of deaf adults), the only hearing member of a deaf family. Eugenio Derbez, Troy Kotsur, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Daniel Durant, and Marlee Matlin appear in supporting roles. It is the first film from Apple to be nominated at the Oscars and starring predominantly deaf/non-hearing cast members (Kotsur, Matlin and Durant) in leading roles.

The film is nominated for three Oscars – Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Kotsur), and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Don't Look Up

Don't Look Up is an apocalyptic black comedy film written, produced, and directed by Adam McKay, and starring an ensemble cast consisting of Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi, with Cate Blanchett, and Meryl Streep. It tells the story of two astronomers attempting to warn humanity about an approaching comet that will destroy human civilization. The impact event is an allegory for climate change, and the film is a satire of government, political, and media indifference to the climate crisis.

The film has four Oscar nominations – Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score (Nicholas Britell), and Best Editing.

Drive My Car

Drive My Car is a Japanese drama film co-written and directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi. It is primarily based on Haruki Murakami's short story of the same name from his 2014 short story collection Men Without Women while taking inspiration from other stories in it. The film follows Yūsuke Kafuku (played by Hidetoshi Nishijima) as he directs a multi-lingual production of Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima and grapples with the death of his wife Oto.

The film earned four nominations at the 94th Academy Awards – Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature Film, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Dune

Dune is an epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, and Eric Roth. It is the first of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert, primarily covering the first half of the book. Set in the far future, it follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The ensemble cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

The film is the second most-nominated film of the year with 10 nominations – Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score (Hans Zimmer), Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects.

King Richard

King Richard is a biographical drama film directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and written by Zach Baylin. It follows the life of Richard Williams, the father and coach of famed tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, who served as executive producers of the film. It stars Will Smith in the title role, with Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Tony Goldwyn, and Jon Bernthal.

The film has six Oscar nominations to its name – Best Picture, Best Actor (Smith), Best Supporting Actress (Ellis), Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Song (Dixson and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter for "Be Alive"), and Best Film Editing.

Licorice Pizza

Licorice Pizza is a coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who also serves as one of the film's producers and cinematographers. The film stars Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman in their film debuts, Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, and Benny Safdie.

The film is nominated for three Oscars – Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

Nightmare Alley

Nightmare Alley is a neo-noir psychological thriller film directed by Guillermo del Toro from a screenplay by del Toro and Kim Morgan, based on the 1946 novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham. It is the second feature film adaptation of Gresham's novel, following the 1947 version. The film stars Bradley Cooper as a charming and ambitious carnival worker with a mysterious past who takes big risks to boost his career. Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara, Ron Perlman, Mary Steenburgen, and David Strathairn also star.

The film has four Oscar nominations – Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design.

The Power of the Dog

The Power of the Dog is a Western psychological drama film written and directed by Jane Campion, covering themes such as love, grief, resentment, jealousy, and human sexuality. It is based on Thomas Savage's 1967 novel of the same name. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

At 12 nominations, the film is the most nominated film of the 94th Academy Awards – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Cumberbatch), Best Supporting Actor (Plemons and Smit-McPhee), Best Supporting Actress (Dunst), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score (Jonny Greenwood), Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, and Best Sound.

West Side Story

West Side Story is a musical romantic drama film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by Tony Kushner. It is the second feature-length adaptation of the 1957 stage musical of the same name. It stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler in her film debut with Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, and Rita Moreno in supporting roles. The film features music composed by Leonard Bernstein, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

The film is tied for the third-most Oscar nominations with 7 – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (DeBose), Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Sound.

West Side Story will be available on Disney+ this March 2.
