By InCinemas  /  30 Dec 2011 (Friday)
[Stand to Win Complimentary Passes to Petaling Street Warriors!]

Make no mistake! PETALING STREET WARRIORS is opening in Singapore theatres on 5 January 2012 and it will be having its sneaks this coming new year's weekend! One of the highlights is the great combination of actors and actresses between Singapore and Malaysia. Starring Mark Lee, Yeo Yann Yann, Chris Tong, Namewee, Frederick Lee and Sunny Pang, the movie also includes special guest appearance of Henry Thia, Chen Tai Ming and Jack Neo - A dream team from both countries for Producer Sampson Yuen who is also taking the helm as the movie director.

PETALING STREET WARRIORS premiered in Singapore on 19 December where the director and cast made their appearance at Shaw Lido theatres. The $3 million ringgit (~ S$1.23m) production first screened in Malaysia on 1 December and was said to be the highest-grossing Chinese film in the week. During the first 4-day box office, the movie collected an encouraging RM1.4 million (~ S$573,000).

To date, the Petaling Street Warriors has collected over RM$4 million despite strong competition from Hollywood movies like Puss In Boots, The Muppets etc. during the December holidays. "Our movie has received much attention from overseas and it will definitely be screened in Taiwan cinemas. We're hoping to get our movie into the Hong Kong as well as the China market." said the producer/director in the Press Conference held earlier in Singapore. Get a feel of the movie in its trailer!

Got to special mention Frederick Lee who really resembles his brother Christopher Lee. Not exactly identical but both are certainly good-looking in their own way. Mark Lee had joked that Frederick is how Christopher look like before he went for plastic surgery 10 years ago.

"This movie gave me a lot of my first-times. It's my first movie. It gives me the opportunity to meet the media in Singapore for the first time. I feel very happy and emotional." said Frederick, who plays as a skilful eunuch in his first movie role. "I was worried about projecting the voice of the eunuch. Hope to bring to Singaporeans a new experience in this movie."

Mark Lee plays Shi Duyao where in the trailer he proclaims that there is no piracy in the Petaling Street Warriors. "Ever since I said this line, I didn't dare to visit the place itself, " said Mark Lee. In contrast, Petaling Street is actually infamous for its pirated products.

Whether in the public or during press conference, Mark Lee had reiterate the point that this is one movie he had been in that feels like a "real movie". "I feel that in terms of Costumes, Make-ups, Editings and other areas, the company has put in a lot of effort and investment. When I reached the set, it doesn't feel like 2011, but in the Petaling street 100 years ago. I've never been so excited.."

If you would just visit Petaling Street Warriors Official Facebook Page, you'll find many positive comments left by its supporters on its wall. One of the selling point of Petaling Street Warrior is having the world-renown martial arts choreographer Ma Yuk Sing as the action director in the movie.

Males aside, we have two pretty actresses who had contributed a lot to the movie. Yan Yan has cried out that this movie is definitely the hardest to earn! She had to do battle sequences, "bed scenes" and nearly all the time to have 2 plastic water bags on her chest to boost her figure for the character! "The water was cold when I first place on my chest and at the end of the shoot, it would become warm! Sometimes it would fall off and I've to replace it. And in the movie, I play Mark Lee's wife and even had to wash his feet! You see?! So hard to earn its money!" Yan Yan exclaimed.

As for Chris Tong, she joked that when actresses film movies, they will be expecting handsome actors. "I was expecting Takeshi Kaneshiro and I have to face Mark Lee instead." laughed Chris Tong.

Chris's hand was injured during a fighting scene with Yan Yan. Yan Yan feels apologetic for the actress. "We had to do a scene at the small restricted area on our first day and our coordination then wasn't perfect. They told me to use the wooden baton without restrain and I hit Chris's hand by accident." Yan Yan retold the incident.

"Ma Yu Cheng (the action director) simply told us to continue," said Chris with a little sadness but quickly energised at the idea of slimming down. "Martial arts can really makes one slim easily! Every part of the body will be slimmed! It works for me!"

And poor Sunny Pang. He's the one who suffered the most serious injury during the shoot. According to Mark Lee, Sunny had fell from at least 1 storey height and landed on his knee cap. "My whole knee was swollen. It was an awful incident and nobody had expected that. I do jogging regularly but now when I jog about 4km, the swelling will return." said Sunny.

Here's the making of Petaling Street Warriors where you can get some insights of the movie! PETALING STREET WARRIORS is rated PG13 (Some Sexual References and Violence) and opens InCinemas 5 January 2012. Click to view more of its movie stills/details!
