The Projector returns home to Golden Mile Tower from August 2025

By Riin  /  23 Jul 2025 (Wednesday)

The Projector is coming home to Golden Mile Tower in August 2025. With the Golden Mile en bloc process now officially concluded without a transaction, The Projector is seizing the opportunity to return to the place it all began.

Back in 2014, three women stood at the foot of the historic Golden Mile Tower and decided to open an indie cinema on the top floor of the Brutalist building. Backed by an IndieGoGo campaign and a dream, they opened The Projector: a sleek, eclectic indie cinema with just two halls, a ghastly astroturf and a mobile bar that sold popcorn and potato chips.

Fast-forward a decade, and The Projector now programmes over 250 films a year, more than half of which are auteur retrospectives, indie offerings and cultural festivals. No mean feat, for a local operation with just three screens and just over 20 full time employees. Across two pop-ups and two long-term locations, the filmhouse has been noticed by the likes of Ai Weiwei, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Joanna Hogg, amongst others, and built partnerships with both local and international distributors… all whilst dishing out gourmet hotdogs, boozy teh tarik and its now-famous cinnamon popcorn.

In the year of its tin anniversary, this is a return to form for the little indie picture palace. This homecoming will allow The Projector to sharpen its focus on community, quality film programming and meaningful event collaborations.

“As we reactivate Golden Mile Tower, our audiences can expect the same irreverent spirit and eclectic, culturally-driven programming they know and love, now with a refreshed energy and a deeper sense of community,” says founder Karen Tan.
