Michelle Yeoh not doing new projects until the world knows about THE LADY

By InCinemas  /  05 Mar 2012 (Monday)

The enduring appeal of the story of Aung San Suu Kyi in THE LADY has created excitement and expectation at the local cinemas. THE LADY’s box office in Singapore is above expectations. Most sessions at every cinema hall showing this title were fully sold out last weekend. The per-screen average for THE LADY on its opening weekend is S$14,200. The weekend gross was S$71,000 for a total of 5 prints.

In response to the overwhelming response  of Singaporeans at the box office, Michelle Yeoh says, “I am extremely thrilled to hear this good news. THE LADY is such an inspiring and moving movie I would like to share with all my beloved friends, fans, family in Singapore. Thank you for all your support again.”

Many Burmese in Singapore who had been looking forward to the opening of the film were disappointed when they could not get tickets to watch their ‘Lady’ on the big screen on the first weekend. They are now arranging to book halls for their own community to catch the movie together for this coming weekend.

Theresa Khin, publisher of Burmese publication Thazin Magazine here, says, “We are very fond of THE LADY as we feel that this movie will be able to capture the world’s attention on Burma’s past and present situation. Besides that, if people from other communities are showing such tremendous support for us, it is only natural that we do the best we can to ensure that our Burmese community in Singapore seize the opportunity to catch the movie on the wide screen”.

Daniel Yun, CEO and founder of Homerun Asia, the distribution company of THE LADY, says, “THE LADY will be one of those rare titles where the second and third weeks will be bigger than its opening week; the hallmark of a real hit by word-of-mouth and building awareness.”

Local film maker Chai Yee-wei says, “I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Now, I get this feeling I know Daw Aung San Suu Kyi personally. A lot of Singaporeans I know are looking forward to watching this film.”

Michelle Yeoh, who was in Singapore last Wednesday to promote her movie, had said in an earlier interview: “I’ve taken this year to concentrate fully on the promotion of THE LADY. This movie has been so meaningful, until we have premiered in every part of the world and encouraged as many people as possible to shine the spotlight on the Burmese people and Daw Suu, I will not have a next project.”

THE LADY is rated NC16 (Mature Content), and is now showing at Golden Village cinemas.
