Perspectives Film Festival 2012 explores Sexuality and its Impact with 6 International Films!

Perspectives Film Festival - Breakthroughs in Cinema, is proud to present Singapore’s premier student-run film festival exploring sexuality in cinema. The six curated films will explore the different facets of sexuality and its impact on elemental aspects of life, such as love, fear, psychology and death.

Perspectives 2012 will open with the Singapore premiere of the Turkish film, Zenne Dancer! Find out more about the 6 critically acclaimed international films after the jump!

Inspired by true stories, Zenne Dancer (Turkey) tells the tragic story of three close friends in dealing with what it means to be gay in a contemporary Turkish society. The film is the first in Turkey to depict honour killings related to homosexuality and it received widespread media attention for its ground-breaking qualities. The directors of Zenne Dancer, Mr. Caner Alper and Mr. Mehmet Binay, will also be present in Singapore for post-screening discussions. “All sorts of minorities including gays and lesbians are demanding their rights. They want recognition, they want protection by the state. They want to be able to live, first of all, and not be murdered,” says Mr. Binay.

The remaining award-winning films in the Perspectives 2012 line-up also exhibit breakthrough qualities, contributing to the discourse on sexuality in both serious and playful ways. Since 1978, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (U.S.A.) has been the longest running release in film history. It also provided a refreshing twist to the film experience with active audience participation and devoted fans. Reputed for being screened at midnight, Perspectives 2012 keeps to tradition with its very own midnight showing of the film.

Both Kim Ki-Young’s The Housemaid (Korea) and Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour (France) showcase women’s sexual empowerment in their confined domestic roles. The Housemaid was considered the finest film in the “Golden Age” of Korean cinema, while Belle de Jour’s brazen exploration of sexual deviances challenged the audience of its time.

Deepa Mehta’s Fire (India) was attacked for its portrayal of lesbianism by Hindu fundamentalists, but it is a daring social commentary about a seemingly modern nation that has, in some ways, been hindered by deep-rooted yet obsolete traditions.

The closing screening is the highly acclaimed film, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Romania), which delves into illegal abortion in Romania during the Ceausescu communist regime in 1970s. “These directors have all broken barriers in showcasing the unexplored facets and realities of sexuality. We’ve curated these six international films to provide a rare insight for Singapore audiences,” says Kenneth Teng, festival manager of Perspectives Film Festival 2012.

Perspectives 2012 will screen the films at the National Museum of Singapore from November 8 to 11, 2012. Tickets are priced at $10 per screening, and are available on SISTIC. Discounted prices will be available for students upon the presentation of valid IDs.
