The 2013 season of Paris Opera brings more options for Movie-goers and Opera-lovers!

Singapore Lyric Opera presents, in association with Golden Village, the 2013 season of the prestigious PARIS OPERA – brought directly from the World-class stage at the Palais Garnier in Paris, France to the cinema screens at GV Grand, Great World City. Check out the slates of upcoming operas in 2013 after the jump!
A lively and diverse programme, the 2013 season has much offer to both seasoned opera-fans and newcomers. The season will kick off with
The Tales of Hoffmann
, one of the Paris Opera’s most renowned productions, on 31 January!
This February, the flames of Spanish passion in Georges Bizet’s
Carmen
will delight new audiences and seduce anyone who’s ever heard the famous theme. A tribute to the 200th anniversary of the birth of composer Giuseppe Verdi, the programme offers
Falstaff
, one of Verdi’s crowning achievements in opera.
Hänsel & Gretel
by Humperdink, a disciple of Wagner, will enchant the young and the young at heart. And finally the opera
La Gioconda
, Ponchielli’s flamboyant masterpiece as it was meant to be experienced – in its full operatic grandeur.
The Paris Opera Ballet will be showing off its eternal youth and creativity in the productions of
Don Quixote
, a richly colourful, humorous and virtuoso ballet; and Philippe Taglioni’s
La Sylphide
which in 1832 heralded the advert of romanticism. The music of
Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony
is interpreted by choreographer John Neumeier; “a great hymn to the glory of creation” set to dance.
Each immaculate production is recorded in front of a live audience, before undergoing professional sound and video post-production and encoding to bring the opera lover as close to the stage as possible without actually having to travel to Paris.
Each opera performance will be preceded by an Introduction by guest from the Singapore Lyrical Opera, with the objective of giving the audience a bit of background to the opera. Ballet performances will be introduced by a guest from The School of The Arts (SOTA) Dance Department.
Ms Ng Siew Eng, General Manager of Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO), presenter of the Paris Opera series, says “These recorded screenings are an excellent medium to promote Opera as a genre, especially to new audiences. You get to see the opera in its full spectrum as an art form, as well as performances that SLO would not be able to stage with its current funding. SLO stages two major operas a year and it will take years before we are able to stage some of these opera titles like
La Gioconda
and
Falstaff
. We are privileged and honored to present and promote the Paris Opera 2013 Season on the silver screen.” SLO was also a partner for the inaugural broadcast of The Met Live screening of Julie Tymor’s production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute in 2007.
Each performance is scheduled for the last Thursday of the month, subject to changes due to programming. Group bookings of 50 or more persons will also be welcomed.
Members of the public are also welcome to join the mailing list by subscribing to parisopera@goldenvillage.com.sg to get updates and news about the Paris Opera performances.
2013 PARIS OPERA SEASON
Performance Dates
The Tales of Hoffmann
'The Tales of Hoffmann' exude a unique perfume, at once bizarre and visionary, sensual and morbid. The gentle yet vigilant muse, the haunted rapture of Hoffmann, the icy coloratura of Olympia, the deathly song of Antonia and the Baudelairian voluptuousness of Giulietta all make 'The Tales of Hoffmann' the absolute masterpiece of its composer – just as he had wished…
(Opera in a prologue, 3 acts and an epilogue; performed in French with English subtitles)
31 January 2013
Carmen
Violent passion crushed by a blazing Spanish sun; Philippe Jordan conducts Bizet’s masterpiece for its long-awaited return to the Paris Opera.
(Opera in four acts; performed in French with English subtitles)
February 2013
Don Quichotte
Rudolf Nureyev offered a lively and pulsating second reading of this ballet by Petipa. Don Quichotte and Sancho Panza happily pass through the torrid love affairs of Kitri and Basilio in a richly humorous and virtuoso ballet.
(Ballet in three acts and a prologue)
March 2013
Falstaff
For his last masterpiece, Verdi found the material for the comedy of his life-long dreams in the story of this old, penniless and pot-bellied knight: a huge roar of laughter, which still reverberates in us a century later.
Performed in celebration of the 200th year anniversary of the composer’s birth.
(Opera in 3 acts; performed in Italian with English subtitles)
May 2013
Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony
John Neumeier lets himself be carried by the emotions inspired in him by the monumental work of the Viennese composer. A perfect osmosis between music and dance, the ballet is shot through with a palette of emotions, sculpting images of powerful lyricism that reveal the wealth of the choreographer’s inspiration.
Performed by The Étoiles, Premiers Danseurs and Corps de Ballet Accompanied by the Paris Opera orchestra and chorus Maîtrise des Hauts-de-Seine / Paris Opera Children’s chorus
(Ballet in 4 acts)
June 2013
Hänsel and Gretel
Influenced by the music of his master, Wagner, nurtured on folk melodies, Humperdinck’s opera transposes the legend of the witch in the gingerbread house and revives a chapter of our forgotten childhoods.
(Opera in 3 tableaux; performed in German with English subtitles)
July 2013
La Gioconda
Hearts are broken and destinies shattered in 17th century Venice: Violeta Urmana, Lucianan D’Intino, Marcelo Alvarez and Sergey Murzaev appear together in this rare and spectacular masterpiece.
(Opera in 4 acts, performed in Italian with English subtitles)
August 2013
La Sylphide
Philippe Taglioni’s La Sylphide heralded the advent of romanticism. Pierre Lacotte presents this emblematic ballet, lost to the repertoire for a long time, in a faithful recreation.
(Ballet in 2 acts)
September 2013
