Riz Ahmed loses his hearing in 'Sound of Metal' trailer

Emmy winner Riz Ahmed's new movie, Sound of Metal, has dropped its first trailer.
Sound of Metal follows Ruben (Ahmed), a drummer and one half of the duo Blackgammon along with his singer girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke). A former drug addict, he is sober for four years. Suddenly, he begins to lose his hearing. His sponsor makes him go meet Joe (Paul Raci), who leads a deaf community. With the help from them, Ruben struggles to accept his situation.
The film is the directorial debut of Darius Marder who also co-wrote the script with Abraham Marder based on a story he conceived with Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines writer-director Derek Cianfrance. Sound of Metal first premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival with critics raving over Ahmed's performance as a drummer losing his hearing, a role he took drumming lessons for six months to prepare for on top of learning American Sign Language.

Ahmed made history when he became the first South Asian actor to win an acting Emmy, taking home the statuette for his breakout performance in the drama miniseries, The Night Of. The British actor is also a rapper, having released two albums as of date - 2011's Microscope (under the alias Riz MC) and The Long Goodbye which was released earlier this year.
Sound of Metal will be opening in select cinemas in the U.S. on November 20 and will later debut on Amazon Prime Video on December 4. There is no word on the film having a theatrical release in Singapore yet.
