VSIFF 2011 Judges Profiles

If you are into global film festivals, but have a tight schedule… VSIFF does it “quick” - an annual global event the 'Very Short International Film Festival' [all films are three minutes or less] happens “at the same time everywhere” in 15 countries and up to 70 cities including Singapore at the Alliance Francaise Theatre 6, 7 and 8 May 2011.

Our judges a mix of expertise and nationality but all active practitioners with Singapore as their based; Eric Khoo with expertise in film, Xavier Nicolas animation, Anita Kapoor documentary, Pierre Perrett commercial, and Juliana Yasin art. We feel the VSIFF 2011 judges panel reflects the diversity of materials that can be submitted; film, animation, documentaries, music videos, art videos, commercials and so on.



Chief Judge
ERIC KHOO, Director and Producer
Eric is Director and Producer and Co-Founder of Zhao Wei Films Singapore. He is also a board member of NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia in Singapore.

As Singapore’s most recognised and iconic directors he was named in Asiaweek magazine as one of 25 exceptional Asians for his influence on film and television. Developing an interest of cinematography in Australia founded his astonishing international accomplishments including his first feature film “Mee Pok Man” (1995), picking up prizes at Fukuoka, Pusan and Singapore. His second feature “12 Storeys” (1997) won the Federation of International Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award and the UOB Young Cinema Award at the 10th Singapore International Festival, and the Golden Maile Award for Best Picture at the 17th Hawaii International Film Festival. More importantly “12 Storeys” was the first Singaporean film to be invited officially to participate in the 50th Cannes Film Festival (1997). Mee Pok Man and 12 Storeys have together been screened at over 60 film festivals, held all over the world including Ivy League festivals such as Venice, Berlin and Rotterdam.


ANITA KAPOOR, TV Presenter, Emcee, Writer and Radio Host
Anita is self-employed and has just completed filming her most exciting project to-date, a specially commissioned 8 episode travel show with Lonely Planet and Channel News Asia, "Stressbuster" which debuted in January 2011.

As a television presenter Anita is recognised for her quick wit, and that rare ability to instantly adapt. A creative chameleon of Indian-English parentage (Mumbai-born, Singapore-bred) she has developed a portfolio of much-admired presenter roles for Mediacorp's Channel New Asia, AXN, Discovery Travel and Living, Mediacorp’s Arts Central (now Okto) and the Starwood Group of Hotels and Resorts in-house channel, Starwood Preferred Guest TV. She is also an in-demand MC for some of Singapore and the region's biggest launches and brands including OCBC, Capella Hotels, Singapore Press Holdings, Sephora, Singapore Tourism Board, ION, St Regis Singapore, Motorola, & WWF. 




XAVIER NICOLAS, General Manager, Producer and Business Developer
Xavier is the general manager at Lucasfilms where his guidance is focused on feature animation production, television programs, visual effects, hand-held and next generation console games.

Thirty plus years has gained Xavier respect as a Senior executive leader in the Digital Media industry. Hailing from Paris, he has been President/Co-Founder of ExMachina, Europe’s foremost computer animation studio, and has developed long term and well-established network of relationships in the Digital Media community in Europe, Japan and America. His specialty expertise in Production & International Business Development, Digital Media Content and Technology has allowed him to source, negotiation and close significant business, technology, financing and production deals in the USA, Europe, Japan and Asia.


JULIANA YASIN, Visual/Performance Artist, Curator, Actress & Co-Producer
Juliana is an independent visual artist.

As a Visual Artist Juliana is highly respected for her performance works in both the art and film media industries. Singapore born, Australian educated her portfolio spans the globe having exhibited and performed works at festivals since 1989. Her work often deals with themes like movement, identity, displacement, freedom and addresses social political concerns and issues that affect her and her environment. Recognized for her collaborative engagement and spirit has found her at the center of many an art festival in a rural town or a city centre to that of Singapore produced Malay sitcoms, and Independently produced films by Directors and Producers such as Wong Hoy Cheong and Nazim Esa. She was the main actress in “{For The Love of Drowning”} that was the Grand Prize Winner for the BMW Shorties 2008 In Kuala Lumpur.


PIERRE PERRETT, Managing Director and Executive Creative Director
Pierre is the creative and marketing driver in ZoMedia Pte Ltd, ZoCard, MADE in Singapore and Navigator Magazine, since 1996.

In a career that spans over 30 years in advertising and publishing, Pierre has been a journalist, magazine editor and partner and creative director in Australia’s first, accredited advertising agency in Melbourne where his primary focus was in copywriting and creative direction. In Singapore through the mid-nineties, he worked with agency clients servicing many government organisations and commercial entities. The portfolio of clients for which he has contributed creative and strategy work, is not only diverse to the extreme, but also staggering in numbers. Pierre joined ZoMedia in 1997 and continues to be instrumental in its growth.
