FoodCine.ma - A New Film Festival on Food!

By Flora  /  13 Apr 2016 (Wednesday)

As the years pass, film festivals are not just about film appreciation, workshops, talks and meeting with the filmmakers. It has sinced evolved into more interactive film screenings; exploring different genres and themes to suit a wider reach of audience.

The upcoming FoodCine.ma is one such example.

Conceptualised by the team behind A Design Film Festival, FoodCine.ma is the first of its kind where a festival is centered around Singapore’s favourite pastime... food!

FoodCine.ma

The inaugural food film festival looks at design through the lens of food, and will include food collaborations, talk and exhibition presentations, and off-site satellite screenings where audiences will enjoy film-inspired menus while watching the film. Since tickets sales launched on 3 April 2016, over 2,300 tickets from 3,000 available have been sold. Additional screenings have been added to the lineup.

“Food is a complex subject where our identity and culture come together. If you look closely, how a chef works is very similar to how a designer works – the spirit of using different ingredients (materials and mediums) and arranging them in a new way. If design is a language, food are pictograms, easily understood and recognized universally,” says festival director, Felix Ng.

Eight feature-length films selected from over 80 international submissions inaugurate the festival. With a World Premiere and seven Asia Premieres, the line-up takes us from the worlds of artisanal saké making and competitive baristaship to an Arctic seed bank and behind the scenes at top restaurants.

Eight short films, including one looking at Hong Kong’s cha chaan teng and another at Singapore’s kopitiam, will be shared as bonus content to the screenings. A short film will be paired with and screened before each full-length feature.
