Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) and Nancy Sit (薛家燕) honoured with the 25th Anniversary Most Popular TVB Drama Male and Female Character awards

The evening started with much anticipation from the public gathering to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars outside the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre. The crowd went wild within seconds of any Porsche in view, ferrying the many Hong Kong TVB actors and actresses who arrived for the Starhub TVB awards last Saturday (21 Oct). This year’s occasion celebrates the 25 years of partnership between Singapore’s service provider and the Hong Kong TV station.

Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) and Nancy Sit (薛家燕) were honoured with the 25th Anniversary Most Popular TVB Drama Male and Female Character awards, both special awards to commemorate this year’s ceremony, for their portrayal of Chai Kau in 2009’s Rosy Business (巾帼枭雄), and Leung Yun Ho aka Hao Yi in long-running TVB series A Kindred Spirit(真情) respectively.

The ceremony at MBS Sands Theatre also saw young actress Ali Lee (李佳芯) winning My Favourite TVB Actress award for her role in Legal Mavericks 踩过界, while the male counterpart award went to Vincent Wong (王浩信) also of the same drama series.

It was a night of tears. Besides Ali Lee who sobbed for her speech and feeling that she was undeserving of the award, many actors and actresses were also overwhelmed emotionally either for themselves, or for their compatriots. Owen Cheung (张振朗) who won My Favourite TVB Supporting Actor was so overtaken by his win, that he teared throughout his thank you speech, much to the amusement of the audience. Adding to the tearing list were also Joel Chan (陈山聪) who won one of the seven My Favourite TVB Male TV Character, and Nancy Wu (胡定欣) who presented the My Favourite TVB Actor award to Vincent Wong, weeping as her buddy received the accolade from her hands.

How do the veteran actors look at some of these relatively new actors in TVB winning such coveted awards in such a short time, many of whom have toiled for many years before they were noticed by the audience and finally obtaining leading roles? Veteran actress Kristal Tin (田蕊妮) feels that she’s not in a position to criticise any actor, not just because she’s saying that in front of Nancy Sit and Wayne Lai, but mainly that in her opinion, there is no such thing as a ‘standard’ in acting. "Just because I’ve been acting for a longer period doesn’t necessarily make me a better actress than a newcomer. I might have become complacent over time, while newcomers may bring a fresh level of energy to the table. I think it’s fair. Life is like acting, and we are all learning. We are all newcomers. There’s so many things we need to learn”.

Nancy Wu concurred with Wayne Lai who had said onstage when receiving his award that as an actor, one needs to constantly accept and explore new things. "Like a glass of water filled to the brim, you’ll need to pour it away before it can be filled again. If it’s always full, you can’t add anything new. That’s should be the approach to accepting a new role each time”. She feels that as long as she needs to reinvent herself for a role, she’s no different than a new actress.

As TVB celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year, actor Ruco Chan (陈展鹏) who was one of the winners for My Favourite TVB Male TV Character, felt that competition from regional Asia TV such as Korea and China can only be a better thing for Hong Kong. With greater competition, there is greater impetus for improvement, and also greater choice for the viewers. He likens the growth of TV maturity as a beautiful Chinese proverb - "blooming of a hundred blossoms”.

One of the biggest winners was drama series The Unholy Alliance 同盟 starring both Nancy Wu and Ruco Chan, including My Favourite Drama . It tied with Legal Mavericks for the most number of awards won for the night. For those who want to catch the telecast of the award in its original Cantonese dialogue, tune in to Hub Drama First (Starhub TV Channel 860) on 28 October. The Mandarin dubbed version will be showing on Hub VV Drama (Starhub TV Channel 855) on 4 November and Hub E City (Starhub TV Channel 111/825) on 11 November.
