The Arts House to celebrate 9th Brithday with Writers Party Open Call

The Arts House is turning 9 this March 2013 and to celebrate the joyous occasion, The Arts House is having an Open Call, giving the public an opportunity to be involved in activities following the theme "Writers Party".



If you have a story, a skill, or a short show to share with the community, please submit your proposed activity and register by 31 January 2013, Thursday. Find out more on the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) after the jump!

Important Note
  • All proposals are welcomed, especially if they are related to books and writing.
  • There will be a selection process, and dates and times slots will be given on a first come, first served basis. 
  • All successful proposals will be announced in early February.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: When is The Arts House’s actual birthday?
  • A: March 26. The Arts House, formerly the Old Parliament House of Singapore, opened its doors to the public on March 26, 2004.
Q: What is the Open Call?
  • A: The Open Call is our version of an arts commons, where we open up our spaces to the commuity to serve up any kind of arts activity that they propose. It is part of our birthday celebrations in which the arts programmes are by the community for the community.
Q: What kind of activities can I organise?
  • A: Any kind! We welcome all kinds of activities, especially if they are related to books, storytelling and writing. The only criteria is that they should follow our theme this year, Writers Party.
Q: Do I need to pay to be part of the Open Call?
  • A: No, we will be supporting your activity with free use of our spaces.
Q: Will I be getting any financial support from The Arts House?
  • A: No. We will only provide the space and some logistics support.


Q: Can I sell tickets?
  • A: In the spirit of an arts commons, we want to keep all activities free and open to the public.
Q: When is the Open Call?
  • A: The Open Call is from March 23 – 24, 10am – 8pm.
Q: How long should my activity last?
  • A: Each activity is given only an hour for its slot.
Q: What are the time slots?
  • A: There are four slots each day: 10 – 11am / 1 – 2pm / 4 – 5pm / 7 – 8pm. Dates and times slots will be given on a first come, first served basis.
Q: Does the one-hour time slot include set-up and tear-down?
  • A: No, you can come in 30 minutes before your time slot to set up and you will have 30 minutes after your slot to tear down. We encourage you to keep your acitivities simple and fuss-free.
Q: What are the spaces used for the Open Call?
  • A: They are Blue Room, Chamber and Earshot.
Q: Will I be able to choose the room that I want to use?
  • A: No, a room will be allocated to you based on your proposal.
Q: Will The Arts House provide me with equipment and furniture?
  • A: Request for tables and chairs will be subject to approval. Two microphones and a basic sound system will be made available to you.
Q: Will volunteers be provided?
  • A: No, The Arts House will not be responsible for providing manpower to assist in your activity. You will have to bring your own volunteers.
Q: Will I be able to distribute promotional materials during my activity?
  • A: Yes, you can distribute your own promotional materials during your activity.
Q: Will The Arts House help to promote my activity?
  • A: Yes, we will be listing your activity as part of the Open Call on our website and Facebook page. However, you will have to market and promote your own activity yourself as well.
Q: What kind of activities should I organise?
  • A: Some examples of activities you can organise are workshops, stage readings, performances, talks and so on.
Q: Are food and drinks allowed?
  • A: Food and drinks are only allowed in the Blue Room.  Please be considerate towards the next organiser coming in for their activity and clean up after your event is over.
Q: When is the deadline?
  • A: Jan 31, 2013.
Q: When will I be informed if my proposal is accepted?
  • A: We will inform you in early February.
