Dominika Egorova is many things. A devoted daughter determined to protect her mother at all costs. A prima ballerina whose ferocity has pushed her body and mind to the absolute limit. A master of seductive and manipulative combat. When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.

It is the cold war all over again, spy versus spy in a story of intrigue. The movie takes us along the life of a simple ballerina, played by Jennifer Lawrence. Her role was brilliantly cast as a young girl with aspirations of being a masterful dancer. But her dream of dancing gets derailed by an accident and her spiral into depression begins the movie. When all hope fails, she turns to her uncle, who enlists her without her knowledge into a game of misery and violence in the world of spies. She has a sick mother, played by Joely Richardson, and the loss of her dancing career means the loss of their apartment and treatment for her mother. Enters her uncle, played by Matthais Schoenaerts, an intelligence official, who offers her with a chance at redemption by playing a honeypot to bait a politician for information extraction. Of course, you can more or less see how bad that can turn out.

Be forewarned, this movie is not for the faint-hearted. Expect your nerves to be frayed by the shocking events at every turn about. Ever imagine how the cold war operates in our current era? The movie takes you into the whore school, where cadets are trained in the art of seduction. No, don’t expect it to be a whore house with orgies and whatever that comes up that alley. It's a school, and academy that trains recruits to know sex, how to read people and their desires, and to use it as a weapon. So our lovely protagonist gets drafted into the school, knowing full well that she will be changed drastically upon graduating.

Somewhere along the way, she actually graduates faster than her other classmates and begins her actual mission to meet, greet and get to know the CIA agent, played by Joel Edgerton, in a bid to retrieve information about a mole within the Russian government. Along for the ride includes office politics with a possible sexual harassment from her boss, snitching co-workers and late-night visits from assassins.

To understand the whole movie, you would probably have to understand something about political hostages and torture. And this movie gives them out in spades. Grab one person, do many painful acts, rinse and repeat. Lawrence’s character seems to have a knack for receiving all kinds of punishments. Getting beaten up seems to be the order of the day for her. Even after all that torture, mental and physical trauma, she still comes out of all of it with a brilliant plan that got her revenge in the end. Just go watch it to see the twist that her character has dealt to her enemies. Overall, this is a masterpiece that made me nostalgic for good old spy movies.
