Warm-hearted local movies are always abundant during the Chinese New Year period. This year is no exception, with approximately 5 Chinese movies targeted at families who seek a good cinema timeout during the festive season.

While Jack Neo’s ‘Take 2’ may not be the first choice for many, it is, in my personal opinion, probably the movie that stands out from the crowd. It is to the credit of the first-time director Ivan Ho, who also double up as the screenwriter for the drama-comedy about four ex-convicts who seek a second chance in life.

Take 2 stars Maxi Lim, Ryan Lian, Wang Lei, Gadrick Chin and Chen Tianwen, following the ups and downs of four ex-convicts who are determined to turn over a new leaf, but not with society’s harsh perception of people who harbours a dark past.

Part drama, part action, and part comedy, Take 2 is a fresh CNY movie that has been missing from Neo’s annual festive film canon. Apart from the famed Ah Boys To Men series, it has been a while since a film like this on the big screen.

The four leads tackle the action scenes rather well, and kudos to Ho and the action choreographer to pull off a nearly a half-hour long intensive climax. While Lian, who has a Wushu background, handles most of the physical fight sequences -a fair share of beating and getting beaten- his co-stars too are given a chance to showcase their action capabilities such as Lim swinging the nunchucks like a pro.

Veteran actor Chen Tianwen, despite having played numerous roles in his career, is quite the scene-stealer. Apart from his outlandish fashion style as the eccentric gang leader, his Joker-like performance is considered one of the highlights of the movie.

While Take 2 may not seem like your over-the-top local movie with overused Singaporean jokes, it is a heartwarming tale of second chances and perseverance.
