7 Spoiler-Free Things You Should Know about The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1!
By

20 Nov 2014 (Thursday)
There have been quite a number of YA fiction movies this year, such as
Divergent
and
The Maze Runner
, but nothing will be able to beat the anticipation of
The Hunger Games series - Mockingjay - Part 1
, which is out in theatres today!
Here are 7 things you should know about the third installment of the series. For those who have not caught the film, fret not as these bite-size information are spoiler-free and VSFW.. (Very Safe For Work) :)
(Read the review and watch the trailers here!)
1. One of the highly-anticipated movie sequel of the year
Let's face it,
The Hunger Games Mockingly Part 1
deserves a spot on the top 3 list as one of the highly-anticipated movie of the year, on par with
The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies
(Opens 18 Dec) and
X-Men: Days of Future Past
.
There’s no doubt that this movie is going to smash the worldwide box office sales in its opening weekend and everyone is going to talk about it. You wouldn’t want to feel left out, wouldn’t you?
2. JLaw ‘acts badly’
The bada** Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence acts badly? That’s quite impossible, you might say, but it takes a damn good actress to act, act awkwardly-bad in a movie. Lawrence had a scene where she had to act in front of a ‘screen’ for the propaganda video, but she’s so good that she looks so bad… Get it?
3. Philip Seymour Hoffman
On a more serious note, actor Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away from a drug overdose earlier this year without completing his scenes for Mockingjay (Part 1 & 2). Instead of digitally adding him in, director Francis Lawrence decided to cut parts of his scenes and rewriting the script, rather than a CGI replacement. Props to the team as the outcome was indeed very smooth and well-edited.
4. More Women Featured
Yayy to women-taking-over-the-world! In the first two movies, it was more of Katniss Everdeen and the boys, (Peeta/Gale/Haymitch/Finnick) with the exception of Effie Trinket and perhaps the other female tributes. For this sequel, we see the addition of key characters like President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) as the leader of the rebellion and Cressida (Natalie Dormer). Even Primrose Everdeen (Willow Shields) gets more screen time as we see her growth from a young kid to an aspiring nurse.
5. Team Gale
Finally....? We have always seen Gale (Liam Hemsworth) as the supporting boyfriend of district 12 who awaits impatiently for the return of Katniss, but in this installment, Gale steps up to be Katniss personal bodyguard, protecting and fighting alongside with her.
6. Jennifer Lawrence Sings!
We repeat: Jennifer Lawrence sings!
Yes, Katniss Everdeen sings in the movie but Lawrence herself absolutely hates it. She has no qualms about sharing her detest with her vocals, if you have seen videos of her interviews from the press tour. In an
interview with Hitfix
, she said she cried that day on set.
To be honest, she sang moderately well, in fact, it turned out pretty good!
7. Effie Trinket NOT in Lavish Costumes
…Say What?! Miss Effie Trinket, the fasionista of the Capitol does not don any of her lavish costumes in Mockingjay? Yep, not a single one. Everything about her in this movie is grey, dull and plain: her clothes, makeup, hairdo and even her brows are bleached. 50 shades of greyish Effie?
Bonus!
Here's one of the best interview from the press tour in my opinion... Elizabeth Banks to Jennifer Lawrence!
