Thor Has Already Made $116 Million In Foreign Markets

By InCinemas  /  05 May 2011 (Thursday)

This past weekend the jaws of film fans around the country dropped when the news came out that Fast Five had made more than $86 million in its first three days, trumping the second place Rio by $72 million. Believe it or not, however, it wasn't the only incredibly successful blockbuster this past weekend.

Box Office Mojo reports that Thor, which has already opened in countries around the globe but won't be released in the United States until Friday, made $89.2 million this past weekend in 56 markets. Adding that to the film's take in Australia, where it opened on April 21, the film has already made $116 million at the box office. The film's estimated budget stands at $150 million, not including advertising costs.

I don't think I need to spell this out for you guys, but $116 million prior to the US opening is absolutely bonkers. It's unknown how much of that money came from the cost of 3D, but the movie could under-perform in the US and still be considered a hit. Given the film's positive buzz and 88% Rotten Tomatoes score, however, it's hard to imagine that happening. All that you can really say at this point is "Congratulations, Marvel."
