Weekend Box Office - Super 8 Shutters Competition

By InCinemas  /  13 Jun 2011 (Monday)

It's a camera! It's a motel franchise! No! It's the number one movie of the weekend?

The top summer fodder tends to be big budget blockbusters. This weekend was devoid of any new major sequel releases and therefore gave rise to a quieter, more original film nabbing first place, despite a low audience turn out.

J. J. Abrams' Super 8 only trucked in $38 million but that's a solid number for a movie produced on a recession-friendly $50 million budget. It's also the third number one movie in a row that Abrams has directed, following Mission Impossible: III and Star Trek. It's a good turn out for a generally well received movie, just what Abrams needs to keep his credentials as a good movie maker intact as he launches back into the heady realm of big budget franchises with the next Star Trek sequel.

Despite being the time of year when most kiddos get out to theaters, kid-targeted Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer got a chilly reception. With $6.2 million in sales the ironically titled new release ranked only seventh place for its bummer summer debut.

Rising star The Hangover Part II surged ahead of Fast Five this weekend to become the top selling movie of the year to date. High climbing Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is close on its heels but is unlikely to pass the raunch comedy for the top title. If sales continue to hold and upcoming summer competition doesn't measure up, it could remain on top to become the first rated R top movie seller of the year since Saving Private Ryan in 1998.
