JK Rowling unveils Pottermore website

JK Rowling has written extensive new material which will be made available to Harry Potter fans online in an interactive experience that will take them on their own personal journey through the much-loved books.

Pottermore will offer new background material about the characters, places and objects so familiar to JK Rowling's loyal fanbase.

The author said the project had enabled her to give something back to readers by enabling them to build their own experience around the Harry Potter stories.

Announcing the launch of the Pottermore website today, she said: "I wanted to give something back to the fans that have followed Harry so devotedly over the years.

"Pottermore is a way for the creativity to live on and a way for me to be creative on a platform that did not exist when I started writing the books."

Rowling stressed that she was keen to promote the literary experience and encourage reading above all else.

The project will launch in October but one million fans are being offered the chance to shape the development of the website throughout the summer.

From today, readers can register for the online challenge and those selected will gain early access to the site on July 31, Harry Potter's birthday.

The eagerly anticipated project will allow readers to shape their own experience by answering questions, being sorted into their own house at Hogwarts and picking up new information and facts along the way.

The author admitted that she had "never cried for any man" the way she cried when she finished the Harry Potter series but insisted there would be no more books.

Rowling has developed the project in association with Sony and TH_NK a digital agency.

The Pottermore site will sell all Harry Potter books, eBooks and audio books in several languages from October. The entire series will gradually be unveiled as part of the interactive project over at least two years.

Such was the excitement surrounding the Pottermore project that it had 85,000 followers on Twitter before anyone knew what it was.

Rowling published the seventh and final Harry Potter book in 2007. It sold 11 million copies on the first day alone. The final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, will be coming InCinemas on 14 July 2011.
