Snubs and Surprises from the 74th Golden Globe Nominations!
By
Freddy
/
13 Dec 2016 (Tuesday)
The nominations for the 74th Golden Globe Awards have just been announced. ‘
La La Land
’ leads the nominations with 7 mentions, followed by ‘
Moonlight
’ with 6.
Singapore may not have screened all of the listed films, but you must have seen some of these, so let’s talk about the surprises and snubs.
(Scroll down to check out the full list of nominees)
Surprises:
Deadpool
Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Best Performance by An Actor In A Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

It is rare for superhero films to get any major nominations, let alone two. Therefore, we were surprised that when one comes along, it is an R-rated one at that. Will this open the doors to more superhero films being nominated for the prestigious awards? We just have to wait and see.
Sing
Best Motion Picture - Animated
If Deadpool was a pleasant surprise, this one baffles us. It’s a fun film for the kids, alright, but it does not scream (or sing) Oscar-worthy. How do they choose to include
Sing
but not
Disney's Finding Dory
? It makes more sense to us to include '
Sausage Party
'
or even the Illumination Entertainment’s other animated feature, the Toy Story-ish
'The Secret Life of Pets'
.
Snubs:
Disney's Finding Dory

Well, speaking of
Disney's Finding Dory
. Disney and Pixar animated films have been award staples in any animated feature category.
Disney's Finding Dory
is a great entry that is well-loved by critics and deserves to be nominated.
Silence

Paramount Pictures
This long-awaited Martin Scorsese film that took over 25 years to make, curiously did not get a nomination for the Best Director category. The star-studded cast which includes Andrew Garfield (nominated for Hacksaw Ridge), Liam Neeson, and Adam Driver did not score any acting nominations either. It would also make a strong contender for Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture - Drama. It is surprising that ‘Silence’ has zero nomination.
Sully

This Clint Eastwood-directed film starring Tom Hanks in the titular role is another film that somehow has zero mention. Also a well-loved film by critics, this film is expected to get a nomination in acting (for Tom Hanks’ performance) and screenplay.
The 74th Golden Globes awards ceremony to take place on January 8th.
What other films did you expect to see, or are surprised to see, in the nominations? Shout out below!
