'Shin Godzilla' Crowned Picture of The Year in Japan

Godzilla is one of the world’s most famous kaiju, dubbed “The King of Monsters”. The franchise has spanned over 60 years with 29 films in both Japan and Hollywood.

The latest film in the franchise ‘Shin Godzilla’ won the Picture of the Year in the 40th Japan Academy Prizes, similar to the Academy Awards in the United States. The feature received critical acclaim and box office success in Japan, becoming the highest-grossing live-action film in Japan last year. It is also the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

The film is the biggest winner in the ceremony. Out of 10 nominations, ‘Shin Godzilla’ won a total of 7 awards:
  • Director of the Year
  • Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography
  • Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Direction
  • Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction
  • Outstanding Achievement in Sound Recording
  • Outstanding Achievement in Film Editing
The only other film bagging multiple awards is Makoto Shinkai’s animated feature, ‘Your Name’, winning Screenplay of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Music.

That is a gigantic win, don't you think? Box office success and awards rarely go hand in hand, but 'Shin Godzilla' can have its cake and eat it too.
