Mexican Film Festival comes to you this week! Check out their films! Some of them are free of charge!

By Say Peng  /  02 Jun 2018 (Saturday)

The Mexican Film Festival is back for its 4th edition!

From 7 to 13 June, the festival will screen both mainstream and arthouse films, and more importantly, there will be both paid and complimentary screenings!

April's Daughter

Seventeen-year-old Valeria is pregnant by her teenage boyfriend but she hasn’t informed her absent mother, April. When her sister Clara goes behind her back and calls April, their mother arrives with concern, support and tenderness. But once the baby is born, it soon becomes clear why Valeria wanted to keep April as far away as possible.

Winner of the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and directed by rising talent Michel Franco, April’s Daughter is a gripping depiction of maternal devotion gone wrong, with Emma Suárez (Pedro Almodóvar’s Julieta) mesmerising as the ruthlessly calculating matriarch.

Hilda

Directed by Andrés Clariond, Hilda is a black comedy that makes an incisive critique of the upper classes in Mexico, HILDA sees an effervescent Mrs. Lemarchand become obsessed and irreversibly triggered by the arrival of a new maid.

Abel

Abel is Y tu mamá también actor Diego Luna’s directorial debut. It's a comedic tale of a psychologically troubled nine-year-old boy who imagines he is the head of his fractured family.

The above three films will all be screened at the Projector. You can get your tickets here: http://theprojector.sg/category/mexicanfilmfest2018/

If you're strapped for cash at the moment, no worries. The festival has you covered. For no charge, you can watch films at the NUS Shaw Foundation Alumni House:

We recommend that you check out Veronica, directed by Paco Plaza, a horror film about a teenage girl who finds herself besieged by an evil supernatural force after she played the Ouija with two classmates. It's a film that is bound to make you shit your pants.

So! No more excuses not to leave your comfy sofa to watch some good films in the cinema. See you at the movies!
