InCinemas.sg's 20 Most Anticipated Movies of the Second Half of 2017!

We are halfway through 2017 and to give you an estimated timeline, we are less than 5 months away to the next instalment of Star Wars!

In terms of box office, we’ve seen a great slate of films earlier this year, including the first Wonder Woman standalone film; local standout film Pop Aye by Kirsten Tan; Disney’s remake of ‘Disney's Beauty and the Beast’; and animation sequel Despicable Me 3.

The second half of 2017 is poised to be a stunner, from hotly-anticipated franchises to musicals, superhero entries, and a great row of films that are promising Oscar contenders.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars! Here are 20 movies you should miss when they hit theatres later this year.

July

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Opening InCinemas: 6 July

Why you should watch: Moviegoers are saying that Tom Holland as the new Spidey on the block is one of the best Spider-Man movies we’ve seen thus far. Plus, with Robert Downey Jr. and Michael Keaton appearances as Iron Man and Vulture respectively, what more are you expecting from this first of the many Marvel-Sony Pictures tie-up?

War for the Planet of the Apes

Opening InCinemas: 13 July

Why you should watch: Director Matt Reeves return to direct the third instalment of in the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy. The sequel to the 2014 ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’, the film is has already received positive reviews for its breathtaking special effects and a powerful narrative.

Dunkirk

Opening InCinemas: 20 July

Why you should watch: Two words: Christopher Nolan! The man that brought us instant classics like “Memento”, “Inception,” and “The Dark Knight”, is back with war epic ‘Dunkirk’. Calling it an ‘intimate epic’, the film should be viewed in IMAX to fully appreciate its scale.

Baby Driver

Opening InCinemas: 20 July

Why you should watch it: Combining action, music and thrill, director Edgar Wright pulls off one of the most stylised four-wheeled films in years. Fasten your seatbelt as driver Baby (Ansel Elgort) takes you to a heart-racing ride.

August

Wonder Boy

Opening InCinemas: 3 August

Why you should watch it: Singapore’s multi-talented Dick Lee will be making his directorial debut with ‘Wonder Boy’, a semi-autobiographical take on the maestro’s growing up years which stars Benjamin Kheng as Richard (Dick Lee), Julie Tan, Michelle Wong, Ryan Ang and Chen Yi Xi.

Annabelle Creation

Opening InCinemas: 9 August

Why you should watch it: Dolls have a history of terrorising children than cheering them up, no thanks to this Annabelle doll. In Annabelle: Creation, the prequel to 2014’s Annabelle, it tells the origin story of how the possessed plaited doll came to ‘life’.

The Battleship Island

Opening InCinemas: 17 August

Why you should watch it: Starring a stellar cast: Hwang Jung-min, So Ji-sub and Song Joong-ki, The Battleship Island shines a light on the forced labour camp on Hashima Island (translated to Battleship Island) where 400 Joseon workers risk their lives to escape the living hell during the Second World War.

The Beguiled

Opening InCinemas: 7 September

Why you should watch: Written and directed Sofia Coppola, the period piece stars and an exceptional ensemble including Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, Kristen Dunst and Colin Farrell. Sofia Coppola made headlines earlier this year as the second female director in history to win the Best Director award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Opening InCinemas: 21 September

Why you should watch it: The highly-anticipated sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ sees the return of Taron Egerton as ‘Eggsy’, Colin Firth as Harry Hart in this spy action-comedy. Joining them are Mark Strong, Halle Berry and Channing Tatum!

The Flatliners

Opening InCinemas: 28 September

Why you should watch it: Ellen Page and Diego Luna star in the Sony reboot of the 1990 Joel Schumacher-directed sci-fi film of the same name. With an intriguing tagline like ‘you haven’t lived until you’ve died’, the film sees 5 medical students embark on a daring and dangerous experiment by stopping their hearts for short periods of time to trigger a near-death experience. Things start to go wrong when their afterlife experiments trespass the paranormal world.

The Foreigner

Opening InCinemas: 28 September

Why you should watch it: Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan go head to head in this dramatic thriller where a father (Chan) seeks revenge when his daughter was killed in an act of terrorism. We’re expecting Chan to display a few of his famous kicks and stunts, so fans of the Chinese superstar, don’t miss this film!

October

Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok

Opening InCinemas: 26 October

Why you should watch it: Chris Hemsworth is back as the King of Asgard in the third ‘Thor’ standalone superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk is back, together with Loki (Tom Hiddleston), to save the destruction of his homeworld from a new powerful threat, the ruthless Hela (Cate Blanchett).

Mother!

Opening InCinemas: 26 October

Why you should watch it: Mother! centres on a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. Directed by Darren Aronofsky - whose previous films include Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan - and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Pfeiffer, Javier Bardem and Kristin Wiig, we can’t wait to see Aronofsky back in action for his famous psychological-horror treatment.

November

Justice League

Opening InCinemas: 16 November

Why you should watch it: The equivalent of Marvel’s Avengers, DC Comics’ Justice League is gathering its superheroes to save the world. Batman, Wonder Woman (which we all adore) are recruiting metahumans to form their new ‘squad’ - The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg - which we will be seeing them in action for the first time!

Disney/Pixar's Coco

Opening InCinemas: 23 November

Why you should watch it: Disney/Pixar’s animations have always been a highlight for many moviegoers, especially when it comes to new narratives that are brought to life, and ‘Coco’ is one of them. A story of a 12-year-old Mexican-American boy who finds himself in the land of the dead, after breaking a decades-old family rule about playing music. Heavily focused on the Mexican festival Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), we can’t wait to see the flamboyant netherworld, brimming with colourful skeletons and Mexican music.

Murder on the Orient Express

Opening InCinemas: 30 November

Why you should watch it: For starters, the cast list alone is a good enough reason for you to head to the cinemas to catch this Sherlock-like mystery thriller. The golden cast list includes Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Daisy Ridley, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi and Johnny Depp! From the novel by best-selling author Agatha Christie, “Murder on the Orient Express” tells the tale of thirteen strangers stranded on a train, where everyone’s a suspect.

Why you should watch it: Click on the ‘Play’ button and be transported into the world of jungle adventures through an old video game where they must beat the game, survive the obstacles and return to the real world - or they’ll be stuck in the game forever. “You don’t just play Jumanji, you must survive it.”

Pitch Perfect 3

Opening InCinemas: 21 December

Why you should watch it: The Barden Bellas are back with more aca-awesome performances… this time, reuniting for an overseas USO tour, only to find out that they are competing with groups that play original music. Returning for the third instalment are Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Elizabeth Banks and Hailee Steinfeld, with new additions Ruby Rose and Matt Lanter!

The Greatest Showman

Opening InCinemas: 28 December

Why you should watch it: Hugh Jackman may never play Wolverine ever again, but we get to see the musical side of him with biopic ‘The Greatest Showman’, his next movie musical after the highly-raved Les Miserables in 2012. Michelle Williams, Zac Efron and Zendaya also star in this show-stopping year-end blockbuster.
