Coco follows the story of Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) who wishes to become an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt). To pursue his passion, he must prove his talent for music in front of a live audience during the Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival – like the Geitai during the Ghost Month. This misadventure brings our young protagonist to the stunningly beautiful and vibrant Land of the Dead that is very much alive!

Coco is built on the Mexican festival of Dia de Muertos, an annual celebration and to honor the dead. The story also draws inspiration from the Mexican’s love for music that gives the animation an accompanying vibrant score to match Pixar’s stunning visuals. Who would’ve imagined that the Land of the Dead is so alive?

In the escape from his family who imposed the “No Music Whatsoever” even from the other side of the world, Miguel seeks out his idol De la Cruz in the underworld to help break his curse. During his journey he meets Hector (Gael Garcia Bernal), a downtrodden musician who is desperate to cross over to the other side to have his photo display on anyone’s Ofrenda and escape from the final death - when the dead is forgotten by the living. The unlikely pair strikes a deal where Hector would introduce Miguel to De la Cruz and Miguel brings Hector’s picture back to the living world and put it up on a Ofrenda.

But the story has a much happier fate for Hector installed which makes us wonder if Miguel’s journey into the underworld the true story? Or that Miguel's disruption completes Hector’s journey and his heart touching reunion with his family.

Our Verdict
Coco is an endearing story rich in culture and music. It charms, entertains and fights for your emotions in this heart-warming tale about family and passion. Don't miss this.
