5 Slasher Movies to Watch to Prepare for Halloween!

By Say Peng  /  18 Jul 2018 (Wednesday)

There will be a new Halloween movie!

What's more, it is a direct sequel to the original 1978 Halloween

In the new Halloween, which takes place 40 years after the first Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis will reprise her role as Laurie Strode, who has been training herself in case Michael Myers ever returned. And of course, he does.

As we count down to the release of the new Halloween, we suggest 5 slashers films you may wanna revisit to prepare yourself for the return of Mike Myers.

5. Child's Play (1988)

The bite-sized slasher that is Chucky.

The doll slasher genre is a sub-genre of the slasher film genre. And Chucky is perhaps the most famous.

4. Friday the 13th (1980)

Jason Vorhees from Friday the 13th carries the most obvious influence from Halloween.

What sets Jason Vorhees apart from Michael Myers is that, as a child, Jason grew up feeling socially isolated because of his deformity. The creators of Jason Vorhees wanted Jason to have a redeemable quality and wanted audience to be able to identify with him.

3. Psycho

Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 Psycho is considered by many today to be the first film of the slasher genre.

The shower scene, set to Bernard Herrmann's screeching score, is probably the most iconic slasher scene in the history of cinema.

Unlike many slasher films which do not age well, Psycho still feels modern. If you watch it for the first time today, there is no doubt that you will be as scared as when the audience in 1960 watched it for the first time.

2. Scream (1996)

Scream is probably the defining slasher movie of the 90s.

I remember watching this movie when I was a kid and it scared me to death.

Directed by master of horror Wes Craven, Scream features some of the most heart-stopping slasher sequences of the genre.

1. Halloween (1978)

And, of course, you have to rewatch the first Halloween.

Carpenter's film has set the standard for many subsequent slasher movies.

Fun fact: The lead actress in Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis, is the daughter of Janet Leigh, the lead actress in Psycho.

Halloween opens in cinemas 25 October.
