Brie Larson Shares her "Captain Marvel" Transformation

By Flora  /  18 Feb 2019 (Monday)

As the great web-slinging superhero once said: “With great power comes great responsibility”. For actors playing superheroes - be it on the big or small screen - it is part of the process where they are required to look the part and be physically fit for the gruelling and intensive fight sequences that come with it.

Officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) this March is Brie Larson, who will head the first female superhero standalone film as Captain Marvel in Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel. Ahead of its film premiere, Larson, together with Samuel L. Jackson, Gemma Chan and film directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were in Singapore last week for a special fan event held at Marina Bay Sands.

At the press conference, Larson talked about her transformative journey in embodying the character. This includes a 9-month fitness regime that included weighted lunges, push-ups, leg raises, sledgehammer slams and many other demanding exercises that keeps normal mortals like us away from the gym.

“For me, it's about putting myself into these experiences and for me to confront myself and the real things that I can infuse into,” she said, adding that she wanted to push herself further. “For me, her main piece was her strength and getting strong and taking a lot of what female strength for her looked like and not just wanting to emulate things I see on screen and understand what that felt like in her body. I went on a path of just like training every day for nine months just to see what I was made of and how strong I can get in the end and it changed me so much.

She added: “There is something about pushing yourself beyond the pressure that's comfortable and going a little further than that and I was lucky to have a trainer that got me into weightlifting and it was really that, it was these moments of breakthrough that goes beyond what you thought was possible; what your body was capable of doing and it means sometimes you end up on the floor crying and begging for all to stop but all of that is what Carol is.”

An idea of how physically strong Larson has become, the Oscar-winning actress uploaded a video on Instagram where she can be seen pushing a 5000-lbs jeep up a road. She even sent it to her co-star and friend, Samuel L. Jackson, to which she said it was to brag about it.

“I mean, when you push a jeep up the hill for 60 seconds, I think that's a lot to brag about,” she joked.

Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers’ journey as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. In this movie, we also get to see a younger Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) who was digitally altered to make him look much younger.
