Love & Pride Film Festival aims to spark change

By Say Peng  /  20 Sep 2019 (Friday)

Golden Village’s (GV) celebrated Love & Pride Film Festival returns for the 11th year this October and will once again feature an impressive lineup of internationally acclaimed foreign titles.

Curated by the Singapore Film Society (SFS), the festival, which takes place from 10th to 20th October 2019, will showcase a slew of LGBTQ-focused independent titles connected with the theme of ‘Sparking Change’. The theme seeks to spark productive conversations on issues faced by the LGBTQ community and encourage a societal change in attitudes.

“The Love & Pride Film Festival has been a major event for GV since its first instalment in 2008 and we’re delighted to bring back this widely celebrated festival once again for moviegoers to enjoy. Through the understanding that our audiences are looking beyond Hollywood blockbusters, we’ve carefully selected a thought-provoking line-up of quality independent films which we believe will strongly resonate with audiences from all walks of life,” said Clara Cheo, CEO of Golden Village.

The festival kicks off on 10 October with a screening of Spanish film Tremors for the festival’s opening night. Directed by Guatemala’s Jayro Bustamante, following the resounding success of his debut film Ixcanul in 2015, the weighty film follows the story of the coming out of an evangelical father which leads to the discovery of a profoundly repressive society and examines the clash between gay rights and religion.

Another highlight in this year’s roster is American film Port Authority, which debuted at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Set against New York’s underground ballroom scene, the movie explores a coming-of-age romance when a boy falls in love with a transgender girl, leading to questions around identity and belonging. The film stars Fionn Whitehead – lead actor in the 2018 Oscar Nominee for Best Motion Picture of the Year Dunkirk – alongside Lenya Bloom – the first transgender lead actress of colour to headline a film at the Cannes Film Festival.

Other featured films at this year’s Love and Pride include Chinese film A Dog Barking at the Moon, Italian film Zen in the Ice Rift, Hong Kong film Tracey, and Canadian film Giant Little Ones, all of which have won major awards at international film festivals.

Cinephiles can catch the Love and Pride Film Festival at GV Suntec City and GV Grand, Great World City.

Tickets for the opening night are priced at $16 for GV Movie Club® members and $18 for the public, which includes an exclusive Love & Pride Film Festival gift bag. There is an option to enjoy a cocktail reception on opening night for an additional $20.

Tickets for all other screenings are priced at $13 for GV Movie Club® members and $15 for the public.
